Aberdeen swept a pair of Myrtle Street Rivalry games on Monday, while the Bobcat girls tennis team fell to Tumwater after a long layoff.
BASEBALL
Aberdeen 13, Hoquiam 3
Aberdeen scored in each of the first four innings, and put the game away with six runs in the seventh, en route to a victory over Hoquiam at Olympic Stadium.
Aberdeen (3-3 overall, 2-3 2A Evergreen) got on the board in the top of the first when Hunter Eisele drove home Trey Anderson with a sacrifice fly.
Hoquiam (0-6, 0-5 1A Evergreen) tied the game when Zander Jump scored on a double play, but Aberdeen regained the lead when Eli Brown forced in a run with a bases-loaded walk in the second and extended the lead to 4-1 with RBI singles by Trevon Nichols and Mason Sorensen in the third.
Eisele, who went 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI to lead Aberdeen, drove in a run with a single in the fourth and later scored on a two-run single from Kenny Dawson for a 7-1 lead.
Hoquiam scratched across an unearned run on an error in the bottom of the fifth and brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the sixth in the pivotal moment of the game.
With one out, Troy McMinn doubled and advanced to third on a Jake Templar single one batter later.
Dominic Standstipher walked to load the bases against Aberdeen reliever Peyton Olson, who then allowed a run-scoring single to Cayden Kempf, making it a 7-3 game with the trying run at the plate.
Eli Brown replaced Olson on the mound, and on his first pitch uncorked a high fastball that went to the backstop. Templar raced home from third to try to score, but Aberdeen catcher Charlie Ancich sprang to his feet, caught the rebound and dove to get Templar sliding home.
Brown proceeded to strike out Chris Bryson looking to end the threat, and the inning, with Aberdeen up 7-3.
The Bobcats carried that momentum into the top of the seventh, where they put the game out of reach on run-scoring hits from Brown, Eisele, Nichols and an error and a fielder’s choice ground ball from Ancich, scoring six runs to go up 13-3.
Brown shut down the Grizzlies 1-2-3 in the bottom half of the frame to end the game.
In addition to Eisele, Kale Goings (2-2, R), Brown (2-4, 2B, R, 2RBI), Luca Pisani (2-3, R), Nichols (2-5, 2RBI), and Sorensen (2-4, 2R, RBI) as Aberdeen belted 14 hits in the game.
Hoquiam totalled eight hits in the contest, led by Kempf (3-3, 3B, R, RBI) and McMinn (2-3, 2B, R).
Eisele started for Aberdeen and allowed one earned run on two hits with three strikeouts and a walk in 2 2/3 inning to pick up the victory. He was one of four pitchers Aberdeen used in the game, including Maliki Balesteri (1.1IP, 0R, H, K), Olson (1.1IP, 2ER, 5H, 2K, BB) and Brown (1.2IP, 0R, 0H, 3K).
Hoquiam starting pitcher Todd Medford took the loss, allowing an earned run on three hits with a walk and a strikeout in two innings pitched before giving way to relievers Mick Bozich (4IP, 5R, 2ER, 7H, 3K) and Jalen Hobucket (IP, 6R, 4ER, 4H, 2BB).

SOFTBALL
Aberdeen 15, Hoquiam 11
Down by seven runs early, Aberdeen rallied to take a lead and held off Hoquiam at Bishop Sports Complex in Aberdeen.
Aberdeen (3-3 overall, 2-3 2A Evergreen) fell behind after allowing six runs in a top of the third inning that included four errors that lead to five unearned Grizzlies runs.
Down 7-0 in the bottom of the third, Aberdeen got on the scoreboard when Hailey Wilson drove in Aili Scott and Laynie Yakovich with a two-run single.
After Hoquiam scored another unearned run in the top of the fourth to make it an 8-2 ballgame, Aberdeen — which has had a propensity to allow runs early in games only to rally back — held true to that form. Bobcat catcher Anneliese Boyle led off with a single and later scored on a Hoquiam error while trying to steal third.
Emma Siano followed with a run-scoring single to cut Hoquiam’s lead to 8-4 and was followed by a bunt base hit from Yakovich and a fielder’s choice ground ball by Scott to load the bases.
Aberdeen infielder Logan Glanz stepped to the plate and belted a deep drive to right field, clearing the bases with a triple and putting Aberdeen down by just a run at 8-7.
Wilson followed with an RBI fielder’s choice ground out to tie the game at 8-all.
But the Bobcats weren’t done yet, scoring twice more in the inning on a steal of home from Madisyn Gore followed by Sophie Bridges racing home after a miss-connection on a throwback to the pitcher to put Aberdeen up, 10-8.
Rather than hang their collective heads, the Grizzlies responded with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, tying the game at 10-10 on an RBI single by second baseman Ella Folkers.
But Aberdeen took the lead for good in the bottom half of the frame, scoring four runs on an error, a Wilson triple, a passed ball and a run-scoring ground-out by Gore.
The teams would score once more before Aberdeen earned the 15-11 victory.
PWV’s Matlock named Athlete of the Week
Pe Ell-Willapa Valley standout softball player Olivia Matlock was named one of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association’s “Athletes of the Week” for Week 7, the association announced on Monday.
Matlock, a junior pitcher, went 4-0 with 31 strikeouts on the mound last week, pitching two one-hitters and combining for a no-hitter in a 17-0 win over Raymond.
At the plate, Matlock was phenomenal, going 13-for-15 (.866) with 11 runs, 11 RBI and four home runs — one in each game — to doubleheader sweeps over Ilwaco and Raymond.
Matlock has homered in five straight games for PWV.
GIRLS TENNIS
Tumwater 6, Aberdeen 0
Aberdeen showed signs of rust in a 6-0 loss to Tumwater on Monday in Aberdeen.
The Bobcats, who haven’t played a match since April 2, showed signs of a long layoff and struggled against the Thunderbirds.
“(We) fought hard, but were outmatched by the more experienced T-Birds,” Aberdeen head coach Ashley Kohlmeier said. “A home match coming off a week-long spring break is not ideal. We were rusty tonight and it showed in our play.”
Kohlmeier noted the play of sisters Annie and Zoe Troeh in the No. 3 doubles match.
“They made some great adjustments after Set 1. The second set was definitely more competitive and aggressive on our part,” she said. “We have a lot of work to do and with a condensed season, any progress is great to see.”
