Elma put itself in contention for a 1A Evergreen League title with a 2-0 victory over Montesano on Friday at Davis Field in Elma.

The Eagles (7-5-1 overall, 6-3 Evergreen 1A) broke a scoreless tie in the 55th minute when Aiden Sayres-Hartman received a hard cross from Lenny Feldhoff and scored from point-blank range to give Elma a 1-0 lead.

Ten minutes later, the Eagles’ Canon Seaberg worked the ball inside and found midfielder Manny Hernandez, who played the ball to Sayres-Hartman in the deep corner of the field.

Sayres-Hartman sent a cross through the penalty area to the far post, where Feldhoff received the pass and made a shot toward the far side of the goal to give Elma the 2-0 cushion.

Elma’s defense was able to hold on despite multiple Montesano scoring chances.

“We really allowed Monte to play more of the style they wanted,” Elma head coach Carson Seaberg said. “We made some tactical changes and were able to play wider and get behind them defensively.”

Monte (7-6, 7-2) had three scoring chances in the first half, including a free kick opportunity that was shot over the crossbar.

“We had three really good opportunities in the first half,” Montesano head coach Rick Denholm said. “We just didn’t finish them.”

The win was a critical one for Elma, which came into the game two games behind Monte for second place in the league standings.

“This (win) kind of closes the gap a little bit,” Coach Seaberg said.

Elma takes on Raymond-South Bend at 7 tonight in Raymond.

Monte will look to rebound from Monday’s loss when it hosts first-place Forks at 7 tonight.

Tenino 4, Elma 1

Too many errors and too many walks led to Elma’s 4-1 loss to Tenino in a rain-shortened game on Monday in Tenino.

Despite giving up just one hit in the contest, Elma starter Brody Rustemeyer was tagged with the loss after allowing seven walks while striking out two.

Elma’s defense committed three errors in the contest, leading to two unearned Tenino runs.

Down 3-0 in the top of the fourth inning, Elma scored its lone run of the game when Rustemeyer, who was aboard with a leadoff walk, came home on a fielder’s choice ground ball off the bat of Carter Jacobson.

Elma (4-10, 1-6 Evergreen 1A) will look to end its four-game losing streak when it travels to take on Forks at 4 today.
