Monday Prep Roundup: Ocosta edges Raymond to open Pacific League basketball season

Seagulls’ Seydel scores 39 points in 64-60 loss

The 2B Pacific League boys basketball season got off to a rousing start on Monday as Ocosta edged Raymond 64-60 at Ocosta High School.

Ocosta (1-0 overall, 2B Pacific League) started the season hot, jumping out to a 24-10 lead as Kobe Rudolph scored 12 of his team high 22 points in the first quarter, including three 3-pointers.

Raymond (0-1, 0-1) got back into the game in the second quarter by feeding the ball to outstanding scorer Tre Seydel. The junior guard made the most of his touches, attacking the basket and getting to the free-throw line to score 12 points in the frame.

The Seagulls outscored the Wildcats 14-8 in the quarter to trim Ocosta’s lead to 32-24 at the half.

Ocosta’s Josh Figueroa, Kyle Wardlow and Rudolph each scored multiple field goals in the third quarter as the Wildcats extend their lead to 15 points before holding a 52-38 advantage at the end of the third quarter.

Raymond made a furious comeback in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Wildcats 22-12 led by 17 points from Seydel.

The Seagulls tied the game late in the fourth quarter but Rudolph converted 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch to help Ocosta secure the victory.

“Well, for the first game of the year, it was a super-intense game,” Ocosta head coach Jason Quinby said. “Overall, our performance was in line with a first game meaning our execution was a little uneven at times, but our effort was off the charts, especially for a first game with masks on. It will definitely be something we have to adjust to throughout the season.”

Rudolph led Ocosta with 22 points and added eight rebounds and five steals to his stat line.

Wardlow scored 16 points and Figueroa had 10 points to finish in double digits with Mark Lewis scoring eight points to go along with a team best 12 rebounds.

Seydel led all scorers with 39 points on 15-of-32 shooting from the field and 6-of-12 from the charity stripe. The dynamic scorer had a double-double with 11 rebounds in the game.

Adrian Quintana scored nine points with Joseph Villalpando chipping in with eight points for the Seagulls.

“Ocosta punched us in the mouth so to speak in the first quarter. We came out flat in the first and they were ready to go,” Raymond head coach Derek Rask said. “We had our moments throughout the game and made a couple of nice runs to close the margin. … But we couldn’t put enough offense together to get it done down the stretch. Credit Ocosta’s scrappy play and hustle.”
