Vikings 64, Gulls 50
RAYMOND — Matt Pearson scored 28 points as Willapa Valley used brilliant foul shooting to beat rival Raymond in a Pacific League game Monday night at Raymond.
With Pearson canning 12 of 13 from the foul line, the Vikings were a sensational 22 of 26 from the stripe — a performance that Valley coach Jay Pearson laughingly called “an oxymoron” in comparison to his team’s typical free-throw outing.
“We did a nice job of attacking the basket and we’ve been working on improving our free throws,” Coach Pearson said. “That was your classic Raymond-Valley game — nice crowd, great band and a game that was closer than the score indicated.”
The Vikings (3-0, 4-0) led by only seven before putting the game away from the stripe in the fourth quarter.
“Valley hit some clutch shots in the fourth quarter and we couldn’t get stops when we needed them,” Raymond coach Mike Tully said. “We set out to stop (Ryon) Ashley and (Logan) Walker and I think we did a pretty good job of that, but Pearson had a heck of a game.”
Walker scored 11 points and Ashley added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Vikings. Willapa Valley’s Peter Hamilton barely missed a double-double with nine points and 10 boards. Ashley was also cited for defense.
Marcus Anderson topped Raymond (1-2, 2-3) with 17 points and nine rebounds.
