MENLO — Matt Pearson excelled on both ends of the court as Willapa Valley earned the Pacific 2B League’s second-seeded district berth by trouncing Chief Leschi on Monday at Tenoski Gym.
Pearson scored 25 points. As important, he limited Chief Leschi’s Donnelle Irvin, who scored 31 in a previous meeting with the Vikings, to 15 in this one.
“Matty did an excellent job of denying him the ball,” said Jay Pearson, his father and coach. “We were going to take him away and let somebody else beat us.”
Ryon Ashley contributed 23 points and eight rebounds and Logan Walker 19 points for the Vikings (13-3, 16-3).
Peter Hamilton grabbed 11 rebounds for Willapa Valley.
The Vikings celebrate Senior Night by hosting Naselle in a non-leaguer Wednesday.

Down 34-30 at the half, the Elks erupted for 28 points in the third quarter to grab a 12-point lead.
Their offense, however, ground to a halt in the fourth quarter. Led by Ryan McCoy, who pumped in 33 points, the Bruins reduced the margin to one. But Murray Cottrell took a long inbound pass for a layin in the final five seconds to wrap it up.
“In the third quarter, we came out with energy and fire, started making shots, setting good screens and just playing good basketball,” Lake Quinault co-head coach Chris Christiansen said. “In the fourth, we came out of our press. It slowed us down and they got the ball in to their big guy.”
Thunder Mowitch led the Elks with 23 points. Cottrell finished with 19 points, 11 rebounds and three steals. Allen Espinoza had 10 rebounds and four steals.

Lake Quinault actually outscored its opponent in the second half but head coach Travis Carstensen said his team could not overcome its poor first-half shooting.
“We didn’t shot well in the first half and they didn’t shoot well in the second half,” he said. “I thought it was a pretty even game for the most part, but we fell behind early.”
