UPDATE: Information added to the Aberdeen-Shelton game reflecting Luca Pisani scoring nine points for the Bobcats.
The Aberdeen Bobcats will be the 2A Evergreen League’s No. 3 seed entering the district playoffs after a 61-23 victory over Shelton in girls basketball on Monday, Feb. 7, at Shelton High School.
Aberdeen (10-6 overall, 7-5 2A Evergreen) got off to a strong start by opening up a 14-8 lead in the first quarter before its offense got hot in the second frame to pull away.
With 10 points scored by guard Maddie Gore and eight from senior Abby Martinez, Aberdeen outscored Shelton (0-16, 0-12) 24-10 in the second quarter to put the game away by halftime.
“We scored 24 in the second quarter and never looked back,” Aberdeen head coach Rachel Wenzel said. “It was a good all-around win going into districts this week with everyone contributing.”
Gore had a double-double with a game high 16 points and 10 steals to go along with eight rebounds.
Aberdeen’s Jaylynn Phimmasone added 13 points, including a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line.
Having completed one of its best regular seasons in recent memory, Aberdeen will enter the 2A District 4 Tournament as the 2A Evergreen League’s No. 3 seed and will face Washougal in an opening-round game at 6 p.m. on Friday at Washougal High School.

Tenino 64, Elma 17
Elma couldn’t slow Tenino’s offense in a 64-17 loss in the regular-season finale of girls basketball on Monday, Feb. 7, in Elma.
Elma (2-12, 1-7 1A Evergreen) fell behind early as Tenino (15-5, 6-2) — led by a big game from all-league center Ashley Schow — held a 21-4 lead after the first quarter and 36-10 lead by halftime.
Schow scored 30 points to lead all scorers.
Elma was led by Emmie Spencer, who scored eight points for an Eagles team that shot 7-for-37 (19 percent) in the game.
With the loss, Elma finished in a tie with Hoquiam for the league’s fourth and final district playoff spot.

Aberdeen’s season came to a close with a 67-39 loss to Shelton on Monday, Feb. 7, in Aberdeen.
The Bobcats (2-17, 1-12 2A Evergreen) fell behind 16-2 after one quarter and 36-12 at the half.
Shelton (9-7, 7-5) was led by senior Tyler Ireland, who scored 12 of his game high 20 points in the first half.
Aberdeen was led by junior guard Kyle Miller and senior guard Luca Pisani, who scored nine points apiece in the game.
“Overall, I’d would like to thank the senior class that has worked through two basketball seasons competing during the COVID pandemic,” Aberdeen head coach Mark Buckman said. “Proud of their toughness and adaptability amongst all the challenges in their student and athletic lives. I’d also like to thank the staff for all the help and support this season.”
