Monday Roundup: Aberdeen’s season ends in Kansas tiebreaker loss

Aberdeen’s season came to an abrupt end on Monday, losing to both Shelton and Black Hills in a Kansas tiebreaker in Tumwater.

Shelton defeated Black Hills 8-7 to open the tiebreaker.

Aberdeen (4-5 overall) lost to Shelton 7-0 and needed a victory over Black Hills to keep its season alive.

The Bobcats went up 7-0 but the Wolves responded with a touchdown to knot the tiebreaker at 7-7.

Black Hills went up 15-7 on a touchdown and a botched PAT attempt that was run into the end zone for a two-point conversion.

Aberdeen scored to make it 15-13, but failed to convert the two-point conversion, ending the season.

Black Hills is the 2A Evergreen League’s No. 3 seed with Shelton earning the fourth seed.

It is the first time the Bobcats have failed to reach the playoffs in three Kansas Tiebreakers over the past four seasons.

PREP VOLLEYBALL

Willapa Valley 3, Oakville 0

Willapa Valley advanced to the second round of the 1B District 4 Tournament with a straight-set victory over Oakville on Monday in Menlo.

The Vikings (11-6) won 25-5, 25-3 and 25-9.

“Our team placed well all-around and stayed up on playing our game,” Willapa Valley head coach Karisa Hodel said. “I was able to get everybody some playing time.”

Willapa Valley had 31 aces as a team and went 67-for-70 in an efficient serving performance on Monday.

Willapa Valley was led by Samantha Sheary (18-19 service, 6 aces, 8 assists), Grace Huber (4 kills) and Gaby Quezada (solo block).

With the victory, the Vikings advance to the second round and will face Pe Ell — which defeated Wishkah Valley 3-0 — at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at Willapa Valley High School.
