Monday Roundup: Grays Harbor College volleyball wins home opener

Chokers down Clackamas in straight sets

ABERDEEN – The Grays Harbor Chokers got some big points from Teila Kapihe down the stretch to pull out a close third set and defeat Clackamas Monday night at Choker Gym.

Grays Harbor (11-6 overall) too the first set over the Cougars, 25-18.

Clackamas made the Grays Harbor work in the second and third sets, however, the Chokers pulled out wins of 25-22 and 26-24, respectively, to secure the match.

The Chokers were down 18-11 at one point of the third set, but roared back to tie the set at 22 before pulling ahead and getting the winning point off Leleo Maeva’s spike.

Telia Kapihe led Grays Harbor with eight kills and Naomi Harris added five aces.

After spending the entirety of the early season on the road playing tournaments, the Chokers were more than happy to be home though it didn’t come without a bump in the road. Grays Harbor had to juggle its lineup when starting libero Lelo Taumua was sidelined with an illness.

“Abby Ives stepped in for the libero and she did really good job tonight because those are tough shoes to fill,” Chokers head coach Christine Nelson said. “Our passing got better throughout the match and we have some big hitters. We ended the tournament in Spokane with a win so we wanted to come out here and get a little win streak going.”
