Hoquiam got off to a hot start en route to an 82-62 win over Onalaska on Monday at Onalaska High School.
The Grizzlies (5-1 overall) got out to a 27-10 advantage in the first quarter led by senior standouts Michael Lorton Watkins and Justice Stankavich with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Onalaska (2-5) responded to take the second quarter 25-22, hitting four shots from beyond the arc in the frame to trim the Grizzlies lead by halftime.
In the third quarter, Hoquiam did a better job getting out on Loggers shooters and relied on its bread-and-butter formula of getting easy buckets off its pressure defense to dominate the frame.
Hoquiam outscored Onalaska 29-7 in the third quarter to lead 78-42, allowing its reserves to play the majority of the final frame.
“I was really happy with how my starting group answered the call in the third quarter,” Hoquiam head coach Jeff Niemi said. “They just came out of the locker room and locked in.”
Lorton Watkins led all scorers with 27 points with Stankavich scoring 23 points.
Zander Jump added 13 points for a Grizzlies team that shot 53% from the field on 34-of-64 shooting.
Hoquiam forced 31 turnovers and had 23 steals as a team, led by Lorton Watkins and Jump with seven apiece.
Hoquiam will face Raymond on Tuesday, Dec. 27 at the Raymond Holiday Classic.

Ocosta 71, Pe Ell 42
After getting off to a slow start, Ocosta found its game to earn a 71-42 win over Pe Ell on Monday in Westport.
The Wildcats (4-3) fell behind 16-8 in the first quarter before catching fire, pulling to within a bucket at 18-16 paced by Kevin Agramon going 4 for 4 from the 3-point line.
In the second and third quarters, Ocosta asserted its will.
The Wildcats outscored the Trojans (3-4) 30-12 in the middle periods, led by senior Josh Figueroa’s 17 points combined in the two frames.
Ocosta held a comfortable 46-30 lead heading into the fourth quarter after a dominant 15-2 third period and secured the victory with a big 25-point fourth quarter.
“I really challenged the boys to clamp down and clean some things up on defense and we did a better job, which led to some easier offense,” Ocosta head coach Jason Quinby said.
Ocosta went 22 of 57 from the field (39%), including 10 for 28 (36%) from 3-point range.
The Wildcats had three players score in double figures, led by Figueroa with 20 points.
Xander Prigmore (19 points) and Kevin Agramon (12 points) also scored in double figures for Ocosta.
Garrison Barnum added two points and a team best five assists for Ocosta.
The Wildcats play at Tenino at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Hoquiam 47, Onalaska 29
A stingy defense helped Hoquiam pick up a 47-29 win over Onalaska on Monday In Onalaska.
Hoquiam (4-2) held the Loggers (0-6) to 23% shooting on 11 of 47 shots and held a 34-28 advantage on the boards in the victory.
Chloe Kennedy had a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds while fellow senior Ella Folkers led Hoquiam with 19 points.
Ashlinn Cady had nine points, four rebounds and two steals for the Grizzlies and was commended by head coach Chad Allan for her play.
“Key player that got us though many rough spots tonight was Ashlinn Cady,” he said. “The stats never do justice on all Ashlinn does for us.”
Hoquiam was without three varsity players due to the holiday break, yet shot 53% from the field on 18-of-32 shooting.
The Grizzlies will face Ilwaco at 5:45 p.m. on Thursday.
