With their league schedules completed and more than a week out from the start of district softball play, the Montesano Bulldogs and Pe Ell-Willapa Valley Titans competed in a nonleague tune-up on Monday, May 9, in Montesano.
On the backs of a five-run fourth inning, PWV (15-2) held on for a 7-5 win over the Bulldogs (8-10).
The two teams traded runs over the first three innings, with the Bulldogs taking a slim 2-1 lead when Ali Parkin was hit by an Olivia Matlock pitch with the bases loaded, forcing in Madi Campbell.
In the top of the fourth, the Titans took the lead for good with four runs. With the bases loaded and two outs, the Titans scored the tying run on an error off a ground ball by Payton Peterson. Jilian Hodel followed with an RBI single to score Ava Bush and was followed by a bases-loaded walk to Lauren Matlock to score Dani Shannon. Another Montesano error, this time on a ground ball by Merissa Frasier, drove in the Titans’ fourth run of the inning and staked PWV to a 6-2 lead.
PWV added an insurance run when Lauren Emery scored on a Grace Huber sacrifice fly in the seventh, giving the Titans a comfortable 7-2 advantage.
But that lead became not so comfortable rather quickly as Montesano mounted a two-out rally in the seventh, with Parkin driving in a run with a single followed by a two-run base hit off the bat of Addi Kersker.
After a walk to Kylee Fairbairn, Montesano had the tying run on first base and the winning run at the plate in Kylee Wisdom.
On an 0-2 pitch, Wisdom popped out to Raegan Portmann at shortstop to end the threat and the game.
Olivia Matlock picked up the win, allowing two earned runs on eight hits with 11 strikeouts in pitching a complete game.
Riley Timmons took the loss for Monte, giving up six runs — one earned — on four hits in 3 2/3 innings pitched.
Reghann Fairbairn pitched the final 3 2/3 for Monte, allowing an earned run on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
Montesano’s defense committed four errors in the game, leading to five unearned runs for the Titans.
Olivia Matlock (3-4), Shannon (2-2, 2 2B, 2R) and Bush (2-4, 2B, R) had multi-hit games for PWV, while Robinson (3-4, 2B, R) had three hits for the Bulldogs.
Montesano will host another top 2B program in Adna at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
PWV will take on 1A Evergreen League champion Eatonville at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Pe Ell.
