Montesano’s girls and Eatonville’s boys team won their respective team titles at the 1A Evergreen League Championships track and field meet on Friday at Jack Rottle Field in Montesano.
The Bulldogs girls team scored 197 points to cruise past Eatonville (139 points) and Hoquiam (76), which placed second and third, respectively.
Montesano won eight of the meet’s 18 events, with senior Lilly Causey (200 meters), junior Alayna Olson (400, triple jump), senior Lilly Schweppe (800), senior Hannah Bruland (discus) and senior Ashlyn Devereaux (long jump) winning individual league titles.
Monte’s girls team also swept the 4×100 and 4×200-meter relay races.
Hoquiam junior Jane Roloff won league titles in two events (1600, 3200) while teammate Chloe Kennedy placed first in the high jump.
In the boys competition, Montesano placed second as a team with 113 points, 20 points behind league-champion Eatonville.
Monte league champions were juniors Gabe Bodwell (discus, javelin) and Reid Pace (pole vault).
Hoquiam and Elma also crowned league champions on Friday.
Elma senior Elijah Flores (long jump) and Jacob Meadows (triple jump) each won a league title in a jumping event.
Hoquiam picked up event wins from senior Alan Ramirez (400) and senior Timmy Higgins, who won four league titles with wins in the 800, 1600, 3200 and ran the anchor leg of the Grizzlies’ victorious 4×400 relay team.
Higgins, who has competed alongside longtime competitor and good friend, Montesano senior Aric Jacklin, since junior high school said racing in the league championships one last time had a special feel to it.
“To me, it really means everything because I’m going to remember this for the rest of my life,” he said. “Back when I first beat (Jacklin), it was my first league championship ever. And to do this with him every single year, for four years of high school, it’s just incredible.”
“I remember when I used to beat this kid every single time,” quipped Jacklin, volleying a little ribbing back to Higgins. “There was one race where he specifically beat me and I was more proud of him than I was bummed for me because I knew he worked hard. That started our friendship and I always look forward to this every year. Every time we go out here and are running just to run and we have fun, it means a lot to me. I’m going to remember this forever.”
The higher temperatures were of a concern for the student-athletes competing on Friday, but didn’t cause any impactful medical issues.
“Normally, on a cold day, I would be wanting the warm weather, but today I wish it was just a little colder,” said Devereaux, who competed in both throwing and jumping events on Friday. “It’s just a little too hot out. … I’m definitely pretty shaky today and I ran out of water, which stinks. But as long as I watch that stuff, I’ll be fine.”
“It’s definitely more of a pre-meet thing because you don’t want to be out in the sun too long and have your body overheat,” said Higgins. “Warming up is key because while you are warm, your muscles aren’t warm yet. So you really have to prepare mentally to get all sweaty and gross before the meet. But after your race you feel good. Pour some water on your head, you’ll stay warm and you don’t have to worry about getting cold.”
“Definitely hydrating throughout the day is the key,” Jacklin said. “When you hydrate well, then I think you’ll feel a lot better than you would without hydrating.”
Those that qualified now turn their attention to the 1A District 4 Championships on Thursday at Seton Catholic High School in Vancouver, with a chance to become a district champion and advance to the state-title meet.
“I’m going to really start breaking down my form and just start working, especially on javelin because that’s the one I think I have a chance in at state,” Devereaux said. “(Competing at state) would mean a lot to me because this is my last high school sporting event ever and it would just be cool to finish strong.”
For Higgins and Jacklin, getting a chance to complete their prep careers running together one last time in the state meet would be a perfect conclusion to their shared experience.
“It would be our last dance, so you’ve got to go all out if you want to make some more memories,” Higgins said. “We don’t have a lot of time left. Only two more weeks of running together, competitively.”
“Hopefully, we both make it,” Jacklin said. “One last dance. … It would mean everything to me if I can run my final race in high school with this kid.”
