Montesano is one step closer to securing the first 1A Evergreen League title in program history after a 9-0 win over Hoquiam on Monday at Jack Rottle Field in Montesano.
The Bulldogs (11-1 overall, 11-0 1A Evergreen) got four goals from midfielder Cristofer Tobar – three coming in the second half – and two goals from Jiovanny Torres to dominate the Grizzlies (5-7, 5-6).
After taking some time to find their top form, the Bulldogs turned up the pressure after the first 20 minutes of play. Torres scored off an assist from Mateo Sanchez in the 23rd minute to put the Bulldogs on the board and extended the lead when Sanchez scored off an assist from goal keeper Jayden McElravy in the 28th minute.
“That was not the plan, obviously,” Monte head coach Fidel Sanchez said of his team’s lack of goals in the first 20 minutes of the game. “The plan was to jump on them early and don’t give them any kind of hope. Luckily, we were up 4-0 at half and dominated the rest of the game.”
Felix Romero made it a 3-0 game off an assist from Levi Clements in the 32nd minute and Monte took a 4-0 lead into the half when Tobar scored his first of the game in the 37th minute.
After halftime, a Hoquiam own goal gave Monte a 5-0 lead in the 50th minute followed by two straight goals from Tobar in the 52nd and 56th minutes.
Torres scored on a penalty kick in the 65th minute and was followed by Tobar scoring in the 74th minute to close out the 9-0 win.
Monte had 23 shots in the game, 11 on target, and had six corner kicks in the contest.
“They are deceptive in regards to they don’t have a lot of size, but they have an idea of how to play the game,” Coach Sanchez said of the Grizzlies and how his team didn’t overlook them. “There were times they had control of the midfield on us. … They are not a bad team.”
With the win, Monte is one win away from securing its first league title in program history, which it will have a chance to do when the Bulldogs face Raymond-South Bend at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at South Bend High School.
Hoquiam is set to face Ilwaco at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Ilwaco.
