Napavine nips Ocosta, 1-0, in district 2B quarterfinals

WESTPORT — Ocosta, the Pacific 2B League champions, got its chance to play on Tuesday afternoon, but were shut down by the Central 2B League’s No. 4 seed.

At Dorland Park, the Wildcats were only able to get two runners on base, but got a pitching gem from Erica Snider to stay close in a 1-0 loss in the District IV 2B quarterfinals.

Today, Ocosta (19-2) will take on Winlock in a district loser-out contest at 2 p.m. at Borst Park in Centralia. The Wildcats will need a win over Winlock and a win over the Toledo-South Bend contest at 6 p.m. to advance into Saturday’s seeding games.

“It was just one of those games where you hit it right at them,” Ocosta head coach Jason Barnum said. “They threw it low and outside. We got underneath the ball and kept popping up. We just couldn’t find the holes.”

Napavine scored the game’s lone run in the third inning. With runners on second and third base, a Tiger batter slapped the ball to shortstop Kaylee Barnum, who threw home to catcher Kristy Raffelson for the out. Raffelson then tried to get the batter, who was running to second on the play. The original runner at second base came home to score on the throw.

Snider controlled Napavine in the circle, limiting the visitors to just one hit each inning and getting ground ball outs to escape the jams. She struck out four in the loss.

At the plate, Ocosta had just one hit and got a walk in the seventh inning, never advancing to second base.

Coach Barnum cited Snider for her work in the circle, which gave Ocosta a chance to come back in the contest. “She really had a great game today,” he added.
