NAPAVINE — Many lessons were learned Saturday night in Napavine, including Raymond getting a good idea of its roster and players and Wyatt Stanley is still a pretty good player for the Tigers.
Hitting an 80-yard touchdown pass on the first play from scrimmage, Stanley spearheaded a powerful offensive show in the first half to lead top-ranked Napavine to a 47-13 win over Raymond in a non-league season opener.
Stanley threw for 221 yards on 11-of-23 attempts, four touchdowns and one interception, for Napavine, which led 26-0 at the half. A flurry of rushing touchdowns by Napavine early in the second half brought the 40-point mercy rule running clock for the majority of the half.
“We knew coming in we were young in the secondary and we knew that was a potential weakness,” Raymond head coach Luke Abbott said. “Our game plan for that was to get to Stanley. The kid is a phenominal athlete. He responded to the pressure. I thought the guys played a really great second quarter. We knew coming in who Napavine was and they solidified their spot. Whoever faces them next will have to be very well prepared. And, we learned who we are going forward.”
Stanley converted his four touchdowns all in the first quarter — two each to Noah Lantz and Jordan Purvis — for a 26-0 Napavine lead. Raymond’s defense slowed and pressured the Tigers in the second quarter, leading to a scoreless frame entering halftime.
However, the tone was set on the first play from scrimmage. After Raymond kicked off for a touchback, Napavine made it 7-0 when Stanley converted a play-action deep ball to Lantz down the far sideline for an 80-yard scoring play.
The Tigers made it 13-0 on a 12-yard fade pass for a touchdown by Stanley to Purvis. The Gulls forced a three-and-out for momentum on Napavine’s third possession before Stanley struck for his final two touchdowns — a nine-yard fade pass to Purvis and a 43-yard screen pass and run to Lantz — at 26-0.
Raymond had trouble getting its offense going in the first quarter, but found running room and success to gain in the second stanza. McCartney Maden picked off Stanley for the first of two takeaways. Jace Duckworth, Kason Koski and Marcus Anderson found room to run and catch passes. However, the Gulls’ lone chance inside the Tigers’ 20-yard line ended on a lost fumble.
After halftime, Raymond had to readjust its offense. Quarterback Koski was held out for the remainder of the contest after undergoing concussion protocols in the locker room. Anderson took over behind center, while other nicks and bruises held out others.
“For precautions, in a game like this, we didn’t want to take a chance,” Abbott said.
Napavine needed just three plays to get to the running clock. After a lost snap at the Raymond 4-yard line, Napavine got a 4-yard touchdown run by Cole VanWyck. Following a Raymond three-and-out, Napavine made it 40-0 with 8:33 left in the third on Dawson Stanley’s 40-yard touchdown run.
The Tigers finished scoring with Dawson Stanley scoring from 18 yards out on a touchdown run.
Raymond conducted the game’s longest drive — 12 plays, 75 yards — to set up its first touchdown. Duckworth did most of the rushing and completed the drive with a 1-yard scoring plunge. On the Gulls’ next drive, Maden got onto the scoring sheet with a 28-yard touchdown run late in the game.
“One of the things I wanted to see coming into this game was what we have from the young guys,” Abbott said. “We wanted to see if we can move these guys around and use them in different position. We saw some positives. We saw guys step up who I didn’t know how they’d respond. There are some positives to come out of this going forward.”
On Friday, Raymond (0-1) will stay home to greet Rainier in a non-league contest.
