North Beach sweeps team league titles for second straight year

Baggaley, Hovland, Cox and Osborne-Hansen lead Hyaks to Pac League titles

In the history of the North Beach High School track and field program, no Hyaks squad won both the boys and girls league titles in the same season until last year.

They enjoyed it so much they decided to do it again.

North Beach dispatched its league rivals in runaway fashion to sweep the team titles at the 2B Pacific League Sub-District Meet on Friday at the Leo Rubstello Track in Raymond.

“It was a big goal for the team. It was a first for our team last year and at the beginning of the season the kids were like, ‘Hey, we want to try to do it again coach,’” North Beach head coach Peter Fry said. “So that was kind of an overriding goal for the year. We are really excited about it.”

North Beach won the boys competition with a total of 181 points, 46 points better than second-place Raymond (135) in a dominant performance.

The Hyaks boys team was led by senior Asher Baggaley, who excelled in four of the toughest running events at the meet. Baggaley won the 800 meter race with a time of 2:09.77, the 1600 in a time of 5:05.37, the 3200 with a time of 11:39.10 and anchored the boys 4×400 relay team to a second-place finish.

“That’s the hardest track day a kid can have in Washington,” Fry said of his senior distance runner. “That was really cool.”

North Beach also got a victory in the high jump from junior Tyrell Hovland, who cleared 5-feet-6 to win the league title for the state-championship hopeful.

Fry also acknowledged sophomore sprinter Noah Aquino, who placed second in the 100 and third in the 400, as playing a significant role in the Hyaks victory.

The North Beach girls team also trounced its league foes, scoring 171.5 points to place well ahead of South Bend (119.5) and Raymond (107).

Dynamic star senior Malia Cox – a state-title candidate in multiple events – led the way with wins in the 200 (27.41), the 300 hurdles (50.84) and the long jump (15-1.25), recording personal-best times in the 200 and 300 hurdles in the process.

Cox also ran the anchor leg of the Hyaks victorious 4×400 relay team, joining Katana Capoeman, Kaci Osborne-Hansen and Abigail Conn to run a 4:29.89, beating Forks by nearly seven seconds.

Osborne-Hansen made some history of her own on Friday as the senior broke the North Beach school record with a triple-jump mark of 33-11 to win the event. The mark represents a personal-best for Osborne-Hansen against a field where six of the top seven competitors recorded personal-record jumps.

“This team is special because they put the goals of the team ahead of their own, and the great thing is while they were going to serve the goals of the team, their own goals came true. So we are really proud of that,” Fry said. “Not only is it a successful team, but it is a bright spot in our school culture. They bring a winning attitude and culture to our school and we see it in our hallways too. It kind of bleeds over from the sport to the school community.”
