That was plenty of support for Palmer as the left-handed ace threw five scoreless, hitless innings, walking just one batter while striking out 13 of the 16 batters he faced.

Righty Cole Gustafson took the mound in the sixth and got the final six outs of the game, walking two batters without giving up a hit to secure the combined seven-inning no-hitter.

“They threw awesome. The dug deep and they went and got it,” Elma head coach Austin Neary said. “Very proud of both of them. … They threw good. It’s pretty uncommon to have a no-hitter.”

The Grizzlies (2-2, 0-1) committed three errors in the game, leading to four unearned Eagles’ runs.

Junior right-hander Joey Bozich took the loss, allowing five runs – three earned – on five hits with a walk and five strikeouts.

“First of all, hats off to Brody Palmer, who was by far the best pitcher we have faced this season so far. He really humbled our hitters,” Hoquiam head coach Steve Jump said. “Unfortunately, Joey Bozich also had a great day on the mound. We were very happy with his grit and command. Having said that, our defense did not give him the support he needed and the game slipped away from us.”

Palmer also led Elma at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a run scored and a game-high four RBI.

Seven different Eagles had a hit in the game and Elma combined to steal seven bases, led by outfielder Isaac McGaffey with three.

“It’s a huge confidence-booster for us,” Neary said of the victory. “To bounce back (after a loss to Shelton) and score 10 runs and throw a no-hitter, I’m very proud of all our boys. … A lot of kids are buying into what us coaches are preaching to them and that’s awesome.”

Elma hosts Hoquiam in a doubleheader scheduled to start at 3 p.m. on Friday.
