Montesano 6, Tenino 3
Montesano’s mission on Saturday was clear: Sweep Tenino and the No. 1 seed is yours.
The Bulldogs got off to a good start, rallying from two runs down in the seventh inning to earn a 6-3 victory on in Game 1 in Tenino.
The Bulldogs (16-2 overall, 10-1 1A Evergreen) and Beavers (13-4, 7-3) entered the twin bill as the No. 2 and No. 1 ranked WIAA RPI teams, respectively, with Tenino needing just one win to hold the tiebreaker over Montesano.
Tenino scored three runs in the first two innings and held a 3-0 lead through four innings behind the pitching of fireballer Kellen Knox.
The Bulldogs broke through in the fifth when Tyler Johansen doubled with one out and came in to score on a Tyson Perry double two batters later.
Knox struck out the Monte side in the sixth, taking a 3-1 lead into the seventh inning. But Knox was pulled for reliever Cody Strawn, and the Bulldogs took advantage.
Jaxson Wilson led off with a single and advanced to second when Tyce Peterson was hit by a pitch. Johansen then reached on a Tenino error, loading the bases with no outs. Cam Taylor struck out followed by Perry grounding out, scoring Wilson to cut the deficit to 3-2 with two outs. Bode Poler was intentionally walked to load the bases for Zach Timmons, who cashed when he belted the first pitch he saw to right field, clearing the bases with a triple to put Monte ahead 5-3. Two batters later, Wilson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for Monte’s fifth run of the frame.
Bulldogs senior reliever Skylar Bove worked around a leadoff double, a one-out error and a two-out walk to get Hunter Sweet to pop out to first baseman Kole Kjesbu in foul ground to end the game.
Monte reliever John Griffin picked up with win, allowing no runs on two hits in 2 1-3 innings pitched.
Taylor allowed three runs – none earned – on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts in 3 2-3 innings for a no decision.
“It was a struggle through six innings for us,” Monte head coach Mike Osgood said of facing Knox. “Tenino made a pitching move in the seventh due to pitch count and our guys really put together a great inning.”

After Tenino responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to take an 11-10 lead, Monte’s late-inning magic continued in the seventh thanks to three walks and two hit batters to lead off the inning followed by back-to-back two-run doubles by Tyson Perry and Poler.

Freshman Caden Grubb started for Monte, allowing seven runs – three earned – on four hits with a pair of walks and three strikeouts in 3 1-3 innings pitched.
The Bulldogs had to overcome some defensive woes as four Monte errors led to five unearned runs.
“Defensively, it was a struggle today,” Osgood said. “But timely hitting, solid pitching and the competitive fight in our guys got us two huge wins.”
With the sweep, the Bulldogs sit alone in first place in the 1A Evergreen League and can do no worse than a share of the league title. Due to holding the tiebreaker over second-place teams Tenino and Elma, the Bulldogs have locked up the league’s No. 1 district-playoff seed.
