Prep Baseball Roundup: Offense propels Montesano to two wins in Naches

Montesano swept two games while Aberdeen lost to Tumwater as we review Friday’s prep baseball action on the Harbor.

PREP BASEBALL

Montesano 12, La Center 11

Montesano’s Colton Grubb drove in the walk-off winner in the most painful of ways as the Bulldogs earned a 12-11 victory over La Center on Friday at the Ranger Baseball Field in Naches.

The Bulldogs (10-2 overall) and Wildcats (5-2) were tied heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.

Tyler Johansen was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and advanced to second on Tyson Perry walk.

Bode Poler moved pinch-runner Christian Morris and Perry to third and second, respectively, with a sacrifice bunt, putting the winning run on third base with one out.

After Zach Timmons was intentionally walked to load the bases, Jaxson Wilson stepped to the plate and hit a grounder to third baseman Garrett Maunu, who threw out Morris trying to score.

La Center pitcher Alex Mora then plunked Grubb with a 1-1 pitch to force in Perry with the game-winning run.

Perry led Monte’s offense, going 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

With Monte trailing 11-8 in the bottom of the sixth, Toren Crites clutched up by belting a three-run home run over the center-field wall to tie the game.

Wilson picked up the win, allowing no runs or hits with a walk and two strikeouts in two innings pitched.

Kolson Hendrickson (2.2 IP, 5R, ER, 6H, 3K) started for Monte while John Griffin (IP, 4R, 0ER, 3H, BB) and Skylar Bove (1.1 IP, 2R, ER, 2H) pitched in relief for the Bulldogs.

Six Montesano errors led to 10 unearned runs for La Center.

Montesano 12, Colville 6

Montesano’s offense erupted for 17 hits in a 12-6 win over Colville on Saturday in Naches.

Shortstop Bode Poler and center fielder Tyson Perry had three hits apiece to lead the Bulldogs, which had nine players record a hit in the game and had six extra-base hits, two from Poler.

Down 4-1 after two innings, Montesano scored three runs to tie the game in the top of the third, capped by a game-tying RBI triple from third baseman Toren Crites.

Monte (11-2) took a 6-4 lead in the top of the fourth, scoring a runs on a Perry single and an error.

The Bulldogs blew the game open with nine runs in the fifth, highlighted by Poler’s two-run triple and a two-run double from catcher Colton Grubb.

A Tyce Peterson sac fly to score Christian Morris made it a 15-4 game after four-and-a-half innings.

Monte added five more runs in the sixth on five base hits – including a Poler double and a Wilson triple – to take a 20-6 lead on a Peterson two-run single.

Caden Grubb allowed six runs – five earned – on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts in five innings pitched.

Wilson pitched one inning of relief, allowing no runs or hits with a walk and a strikeout.

Tumwater 13, Aberdeen 3

Aberdeen’s hopes of earning a key league victory were dashed in the fifth inning of a 13-3 loss to Tumwater on Friday at Pioneer Park in Aberdeen.

The Bobcats (3-7, 1-4 2A Evergreen) took a 3-1 lead with three runs in the bottom of the first on two Tumwater errors.

The T-Birds (7-3, 5-0) took a 5-3 lead with two walks and three singles in a four-run top of the third inning.

Tumwater put the game away with eight runs in the fifth, helped by three Bobcats errors in the frame to extend Aberdeen’s losing streak to seven games.

Aberdeen pitcher Hunter Eisele took the loss, allowing nine earned runs on six hits and seven walks with four strikeouts in 4 1-3 innings pitched.

Chad Fretts allowed three runs – none earned – on a hit and a walk in 2-3 innings of relief for the Bobcats.

Aberdeen managed three hits in the game, led by Fretts who had the Bobcats’ only extra-base hit in the contest, a leadoff double in the bottom of the second inning.

Naselle 17, Raymond-South Bend 1

Raymond-South Bend saw the game get out of hand in the third inning of a 17-1 loss on Thursday in South Bend.

The Ravens (3-5) trailed 4-0 after the Comets (4-1) scored four runs in the top of the second inning.

RSB was put into run-rule territory after Naselle scored 11 in the top of the third. The Comets recorded nine hits – including six straight – and benefited from two Ravens errors in the inning.

The Ravens scored their lone run of the game when infielder Nolen Miller doubled with one out and eventually came in to score on a Branson Williams fielder’s choice ground out in the bottom of the fourth inning.

RSB faces Pe Ell-Willapa Valley in a double header starting at 3 p.m. on Wednesday in Pe Ell.

Toledo 5, Pe Ell-Willapa Valley 3

A late rally by Pe Ell-Willapa Valley fell short in a 5-3 loss to Toledo on Friday in Pe Ell.

The Titans (6-2) trailed 5-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning but got the frame off to a good start with a leadoff triple by center fielder Blane King.

After Blake Howard popped out to the catcher, King came in to score on a Lucas Lusk fielder’s choice ground out.

Brayden Ruddell singled followed by a walk to Connor “Cheese” Keeton to extend the inning.

PWV’s Liam Smaciarz then reached on an error and represented the tying run at first base.

A passed ball allowed Ruddell to score and put the the tying run on second base.

But PWV left fielder Max Jarvis grounded out, ending the Titans’ comeback bid.

Keeton took the loss, allowing five runs – three earned – on seven hits with a walk and six strikeouts in six innings pitched.

Ruddell led the PWV offense with two hits, a run scored and an RBI.

PWV had four hits in the game, including a King triple.

The Titans host Raymond-South Bend in a double header starting at 3 p.m. on Wednesday in Pe Ell.

Ocosta 20, Onalaska 10

Ocosta set a new season-high in runs scored with a 20-10 win over Onalaska on Friday at Grand Armory Memorial Park in Westport.

The high-scoring Wildcats (6-0) – which has scored 10 or more runs in every game this season – scored 10 runs on nine hits and drew 15 walks against four Onalaska pitchers.

Ocosta trailed 9-6 after giving up five runs to the Loggers (0-10) in the top of the fourth inning, but scored eight runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 14-9 lead.

In the half-inning, the Wildcats got RBI singles from both shortstop Andrew Martin and outfielder Logan White and drew six walks as a team.

Martin led Ocosta’s offense, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two doubles, three runs scored and four RBI.

White picked up the win, tossing 1 1-3 innings of scoreless relief.

Ocosta faces Ilwaco in a double header scheduled for 3 p.m. Tuesday in Ilwaco.
