Prep Baseball Roundup: Top-ranked Montesano closes regular season with 12th straight victory

Montesano closed out its regular season with a win while Pac League teams opened the 2B District 4 Tournament as we review prep baseball action on the Harbor.

PREP BASEBALL

Montesano 11, Kingston 2

Montesano wrapped up its regular season with an 11-2 win over Kingston on Saturday at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma, its 12th straight win of the season.

The Bulldogs (19-2 overall) scored three runs with two outs – capped by an RBI double from senior Cam Taylor – to take a 3-0 lead after one inning.

Monte took a 6-0 lead with three in the bottom of the third on a Jaxson Wilson run-scoring ground out followed later in the frame by two runs crossing on a passed ball and a wild pitch.

Kingston (10-10) manufactured a walk into a run on a fielder’s choice ground out in the third and scored a run in the fifth on a Montesano error.

Monte added two in the fifth when Wilson scored on an error followed by a bases-loaded walk to Tucker Eaton.

The Bulldogs broke double digits when Wilson and pitcher Sklyar Bove drove in runs with doubles sandwiched around Bode Poler scoring on a passed ball to make it an 11-2 ballgame.

The two teams combined to use 12 different pitchers in the game – six per team – in a non-league tune-up ahead of their respective district tournaments.

Taylor started for Monte and earned the win, allowing no runs or hits with a walk and two strikeouts in pitching the first inning.

Top-ranked Monte faces Castle Rock in a 1A District 4 Tournament first-round game at 6 p.m. on Monday at Olympic Stadium in Hoquiam.

Pe Ell-Willapa Valley 9, Wahkiakum 7

Pe Ell-Willapa Valley opened 2B District 4 Tournament play with a with a thrilling walk-off 9-7 victory on Friday at Toutle Lake High School.

The Titans (16-5) and Mules (8-13) were tied at 7-7 in the bottom of the seventh when PWV first baseman Liam Smaciarz stepped to the plate with no outs and Connor “Cheese” Keeton aboard on an error.

Smaciarz belted Parker Leitz’s 0-1 pitch over the center-field fence for a walk-off, two-run home run to give the Titans the victory and end Wahkiakum’s season.

PWV led 4-0 after a four-run second inning, highlighted by a Lucas Lusk two-run double and a Brayden Ruddell RBI single, but saw the advantage evaporate after four walks, two hit batters and three errors contributed to the Mules’ seven runs in the top of the fifth.

Down 7-5, PWV infielder Max Jarvis and center fielder Aiden Young drove in Smaciarz and Blake Howard, respectively, with fielder’s choice ground outs to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth.

Jarvis earned the win, shutting out the Mules on one hit with two walks and a strikeout in 2 1-3 innings pitched.

Keeton (4.1 IP, 5R, 4ER, 3H, 3BB, 5K) started for PWV with Lusk (0.1 IP, 2R, ER, H, 2BB, K) also pitching in relief for the Titans.

With the win, the Titans advance to the district semifinals against Toutle Lake.

Toutle Lake 11, Pe Ell-Willapa Valley 1

Pe Ell-Willapa Valley had little answers for Toutle Lake in an 11-1 five-inning loss in the 2B District 4 quarterfinals on Friday at Toutle Lake High School.

The Titans struck first when senior Blake Howard drove in Brayden Ruddell with a line-drive single to center field in the top of the first inning.

The the Ducks (20-3), the No. 3 RPI team in the 2B class, responded with two in the bottom of the first when sophomore Easton White homered with a man on for a 2-1 lead.

That was as close as the Titans would get as Toutle Lake used two leadoff errors in the bottom of the second to score four runs and ended the game with four in the bottom of the fifth, walking off when Ryan Kilponen grounded out to score Dylan Fraidenburg with the Ducks’ 11th run.

PWV managed just two hits in the game off Ducks senior pitcher Zach Swanson, who allowed one earned run and struck out 12 in five innings of work.

The loss relegates PWV to the district-elimination bracket, where the Titans will face Toledo at 1 p.m. on Monday at Napavine High School.

Kalama 14, Ocosta 4

Ocosta’s season came to an end with a 14-4 first-round loss to Kalama in a 2B District 4 Tournament game on Friday at Adna High School.

The Wildcats (8-10) trailed 2-0 entering the top of the fifth against the Chinooks (13-8) before the wheels came off.

Kalama scored six two-out runs in the frame on just two hits, but were assisted by a hit batter and three Wildcats errors to take an 8-0 lead.

Ocosta rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth on a bases-loaded walk to third baseman Mark Sevilla followed by an RBI single off the bat of outfielder Brayden Dungey.

But the Wildcats pitching staff failed to stop the bleeding, allowing six runs over the final two innings.

Ocosta scored two more in the seventh when left fielder Logan White crossed the plate on a wild pitch and Sevilla scored on a Chris Arbona fielder’s choice groundout, but it was too little, too late as the Wildcats suffered the season-ending loss.

Miscues hurt Ocosta in the game, with four pitchers combining to hand out nine free passes combined with seven defensive errors leading to eight unearned runs for Kalama.

Ocosta catcher Andrew Martin led the Wildcats, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Raymond-South Bend’s season came to an end with a 13-0 mercy-rule loss to Toledo in the first round of the 2B District 4 Tournament on Friday at Culbertson Park in Long Beach.

The Ravens (4-8) had just two hits off Toledo pitching and saw the Riverhawks (13-10) put the game into run-rule territory with eight runs in the bottom of the fourth on six hits – including three doubles – and three walks to go up 13-0.

RSB eighth-grader Keeton Nichols (1-3) and senior left fielder Jayden Lindberg (1-2) each had a base hit for the Ravens.

RSB pitcher Nolen Miller took the loss, allowing 10 runs – nine earned – on six hits with five walks and a strikeout in 3 1-3 innings pitched.
