The Dalles 82, Elma 40
Making the trip south to Seaside, Oregon for the second consecutive season to compete in the Seaside Holiday Classic, Elma struggled in an 82-40 loss to The Dalles on Thursday.
In one of its most lopsided losses in recent memory, Elma committed 30 turnovers and hit 16-of-45 shots from the field (36%) in the loss to the Riverhawks (3-3).
Elma senior post AJ Holmes accounted for more than half of his team’s offense, scoring 21 points on 8-of-20 shooting (45%).
Senior guard Cason Seaberg had eight points as no other Eagle scored more than five points in the game.
The Dalles 23 22 27 10 – 82
Elma 10 9 14 7 – 40
Scoring: Elma – Holmes 21, Seaberg 8, Carter 5, Studer 4, McGaffey 2.
Elma 59, Madras 54
Elma responded after a blowout loss the previous evening to earn a rousing 59-54 victory over Madras on Friday at the Seaside Holiday Classic in Seaside, Oregon.
The Eagles (4-3 overall) led for most of the game until the White Buffaloes (0-2) gained the lead in the fourth quarter.
An offensive rebound and basket by senior post Carter Studer followed by a Grant Vessey backside pass to AJ Holmes for a bucket put the Eagles in front for good.
”We completely flipped the switch between our first two games at the Seaside Holiday Classic,” Elma head coach Matt Ferrier said. “One night removed from our players’ worst varsity loss of their careers, we responded in a big way.”
Holmes led Elma for the second consecutive game with 18 points on 8-of-16 shooting to go along with eight rebounds.
Junior post Traden Carter added 10 points, four assists and three steals while senior guard Cason Seaberg – who played decoy for the Madras defense – had nine points, seven rebounds, two steals and a team-high six assists.
“AJ Holmes played two very good basketball games. Cason Seaberg did a great job being the focus of the other teams’ defensive plan. His unselfishness tonight was huge. Then we had the rest of the team deliver execution from their roles,” said Ferrier, who added his team got back to dictating the pace of play after Thursday’s loss. “Last night, our team lacked effort and the mentality to beat a big school. Tonight’s word of the game was ‘energy.’ … The biggest key of the game was our ability to slow an athletic team down. We made them play at our pace for the majority of the night.”
The Eagles shot 49% on 25-of-51 shooting, had 17 assists and nine steals to 12 turnovers as a team.
Elma completes its Oregon trip with a game against Dallas (Oregon) at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.
