BOYS PREP BASKETBALL
Tenino 56, Elma 49
One of the teams figured to be in the mix for a 1A Evergreen League title took a proverbial gut-punch on Wednesday as the Elma Eagles lost to Tenino 56-49 at Elma High School.
“We ran into a very motivated Tenino team. They came out and played a damn fine basketball game,” said Elma head coach Matt Ferrier, whose team led 13-6 after one quarter of play but was outscored by 18 points over the second and third quarters combined. “Their size and athleticism affected us a ton tonight.”
Elma (8-4 overall, 1-1 1A Evergreen) shot 41% from the field on 17-of-41 shooting, including 11 of 22 from 3-point range (50%).
But the Eagles attempted just seven free throws in the game, making four of them, committed 15 turnovers, had 17 personal fouls and lost the battle of the boards with just 19 rebounds as a team.
“Their zone defense was a tough one to break. We shot incredibly well from the three-point range but missed mostly everything inside 19 feet. You aren’t going to win very many games without scoring some points in the paint,” Ferrier said. “The free-throw battle went to them. The rebounding battle went to them. The turnover battle went to them. Game over.”
Senior guard Traden Carter (14 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals), junior forward Isaac McGaffey (10 pts., 7 reb., 4 ast., 4 stl, block) and senior guard Theo Flores (10 pts., 2 reb., 4 ast.) each scored in double digits for the Eagles.
Ferrier added that despite the loss to the Beavers (3-11, 1-1), which snapped a five-game losing streak with the win, he liked the way his team kept battling.
“Incredibly proud of how hard we fought,” he said. “There isn’t any quit in these kids and I respect them for that.”
Elma will face Hoquiam at 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday at Hoquiam Square Garden.
