BOYS PREP BASKETBALL
Toutle Lake 71, Elma 59
Elma opened its season with a 71-59 loss to Toutle Lake on Monday at Toutle Lake High School.
Elma (0-1 overall) remained close to the talented Ducks, trailing by six points after one quarter and seven at the half.
But the Ducks (1-0) pulled away in the fourth quarter with 24 points, led by Hunter Lundquist, who scored 10 of his game-high 21 points in the frame.
“We had spurts of great basketball and spurts of bad basketball. You could tell it was our first game,” Elma head coach Matt Ferrier said. “Too many unforced turnovers, too many missed lay-ins, and when free throws came at a premium to us, we missed eight of them.”
Toutle Lake standout senior Zach Swanson scored 17 points despite just hitting one field goal in the game. Swanson, who needed just three points to surpass 2,000 in his prep career, hit a pair of free throws in the first quarter and was shut out the rest of the first half by the Elma defense.
But Swanson attacked the basket in the second half, going 13-for-15 from the line in the third and fourth quarters combined.
“Not too often a kid like that will be held to only only made shot on the night,” Elma head coach Matt Ferrier said. “Our defensive plan worked for three quarters. He just got to the free-throw line way too much in the fourth. Our trio of defenders in Cason Seaberg, Traden Carter and Carter Studer frustrated him all night.”
Seaberg scored 17 points – 15 in the second half – while Studer dropped 15 for the Eagles.
Elma senior forward AJ Holmes also scored in double digits with 10 points.
“Carter Studer played amazing on Swanson. He played extremely well offensively. Great game to start his senior year,” Ferrier said. “Seaberg’s second half was impressive as well. Nice job coming in at half after being frustrated by their defensive scheme.”
Elma is set to play at Aberdeen at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

Ocosta 48, Pe Ell 35
Ocosta overcame some season-opening struggles to emerge with a 48-35 win over Pe Ell on Monday in Westport.
The Wildcats (1-0) committed 21 turnovers and shot better from beyond the arc (9-for-24) than from inside (9-for-26).
According to Ocosta head coach Jason Quinby, the key to the victory was his team’s defensive play, particularly at the start of each half.
“I thought our defense really set the tone, especially in the first and third quarters,” said Quinby, whose team held Pe Ell to five and three points, respectively, in those periods. “We got a little complacent in the second and fourth quarters by not keeping the ball in front and giving Pe Ell some better looks at the bucket.”
Michael Priest led the Wildcats with 13 points to go along with four rebounds, three assists, a pair of steals and a blocked shot.
Noah Prigmore scored 12 points, including 4-for-6 shooting from the 3-point line, and Kayden Turner added 10 points for the Wildcats.
Eighth-grader Sonny Beard, playing in his first varsity game, had a team-high 10 rebounds for Ocosta.
“Overall, we will have to play cleaner basketball going forward, but we’re excited to get a win in our first game,” Quinby said.
Ocosta is scheduled to face Chief Leschi in a 2B Pacific League game at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

GIRLS PREP BASKETBALL
Raymond-South Bend 43, Onalaska 34
Despite the two schools deciding to combine for basketball a mere four days prior, Raymond-South Bend came together to pick up a 43-34 season-opening victory over Onalaska on Monday at Raymond High School.
The Ravens (1-0) started the game “with great energy and focus,” according to head coach Jason Koski, to jump out to a 15-4 lead after the first quarter, benefiting from 3-pointers by Avalynn Stigall, Kyndal and Kassie Koski in the the frame.
RSB got into foul trouble in the second period after Onalaska (0-1) attacked the basket, but the Ravens bench preserved a nine-point lead going into the half.
Onalaska continued to attack the rim in the second half, which further compounded the Ravens’ foul troubles. RSB’s lead was trimmed to as low as five points in the fourth quarter, but the Raven’s defense held firm to secure the victory.
“We made just enough defensive plays and made just enough shots to seal the win,” Coach Koski said. “Considering the circumstances – combining four days before the season started – I’m very happy with our effort and our ability to make in-game adjustments and corrections.”
The Ravens were led by senior guard Kyndal Koski with 12 points to go along with five rebounds, four steals and and three assists.
RSB point guard Megan Kongbouakhay had nine points with four steals and three assists for the Ravens, which had 14 steals and 20 turnovers as a team.
