GIRLS PREP BASKETBALL

Hoquiam 47, Aberdeen 42

For the first time in seven seasons, the Hoquiam girls basketball team swept the season series against their Myrtle Street rivals.

Hoquiam hit key shots down the stretch to earn a topsy-turvy 47-42 victory over Aberdeen on Monday at Hoquiam Square Garden.

The Grizzlies (8-6 overall) led by as much as eight points with less than a half-minute to play in the first quarter until the Bobcats (3-7) closed the frame with four straight points, capped by a pair of free throws from sophomore point guard Sophia Knutson to trim Hoquiam’s lead to 17-13.

But in the second quarter, Hoquiam’s offense went ice cold and Aberdeen took advantage.

The Bobcats took a 21-19 lead halfway through the period on back-to-back threes from freshman guard Shay Dunlap and sophomore guard Bentley Brown.

Aberdeen wasn’t done as Dunlap scored on the break to cap a 10-0 run and put the Cats up 26-19 with 2:11 to play in the first half.

A pair of free throws by Hoquiam senior guard Katlyn Brodhead closed out the half with Aberdeen up 26-21.

The two teams flipped the script in the third quarter as it was Hoquiam’s turn to go on an extended run.

The Grizzlies tied the game at 26-all on a reverse lay-up by freshman post Aaliyah Kennedy in the midst of what became a 15-0 Hoquiam run.

Kennedy would cap the streak on a key basket off an offensive rebound to put the Grizzlies up 36-26 and send Brown – the Bobcats’ leading scorer – to the bench after fouling out with her fifth infraction of the contest.

Aberdeen would finally get on the board in the third when Knutson scored on a drive and finger-roll basket with 1:33 left in the third.

Hoquiam junior post Sydney Gordon would make 1-of-2 free throws to close out a 16-2 quarter for the Grizzlies, which held a 37-28 lead entering the final quarter of play.

But it wouldn’t be a Myrtle Street Rivalry game without a healthy dose of twists and turns, and the fourth quarter proved to have more of that in store for the near-capacity crowd.

Aberdeen turned some good perimeter defense into offense by jumping passing lanes and opened the fourth with a 9-0 run capped by a three from senior guard Abby Mainio to cut Hoquiam’s lead to 37-36 with 5:26 still to play.

Then just like that, Aberdeen couldn’t buy a bucket. The Bobcats had the ball go out of bounds after a missed three, committed a three-second violation and missed a pair of free throws over their next three possessions to remain one point behind Hoquiam.

That was until a foul by Kennedy produced a reactionary technical foul of the verbal kind from an Aberdeen player, resulting in a lengthy discussion between the referees and coaches and trips to the free-throw line for both teams.

Hoquiam guard Lexi LaBounty converted 1-of-2 technical-foul free throws followed by Knutson converting 1 of 2 after the Kennedy foul, which was Hoquiam’s fifth of the fourth quarter.

When the dust settled, Hoquiam remained on top by one at 38-37 with 3:40 to play.

It wouldn’t stay that was for long as Gordon asserted herself in the paint, grabbing an offensive rebound and scoring to put the Grizzlies up 40-37 at the 3:16 mark.

The 5-foot-9 forward then buried a free-throw line jump shot for a 42-37 lead with just under three minutes to play.

Kennedy followed with an offensive rebound and putback of her own for a 44-37 lead with 2:17 to play.

Knutson made the second of two free throws to make it a two-score game at 44-38, but the Bobcats were forced to foul down the stretch.

In the final minute, Gordon made two free throws with Kennedy going 1-of-2 from the line to stake the Grizzlies to a 47-38 lead with 21.6 left on the clock.

“Just make them,” Gordon said of her mindset stepping to the foul line in the final minute. “I know I can make them. I shot 20-plus of them in the gym yesterday. So I knew I could make those shots and I was just wanting them to drop.”

Aberdeen scored on a baseline one-handed shot by Mainio and an offensive rebound and score by senior post Alyvia Lamont in the final 10 seconds to make it more interesting, but Hoquiam ran off the final 3.7 seconds to secure the victory.

“It’s a rivalry game,” Hoquiam head coach Chad Allan said. “So you have a lot of dysfunction. You have things that go well, which we did, and then you have things that end up with a little more chaos. We were able to weather storms and in the past few years, we wouldn’t have been able to do that. Love my kids for being able to do that. So we’ve made a lot of growth there.”

Kennedy and Gordon each had double-doubles to lead Hoquiam. Kennedy scored a game-high 13 points and had 13 rebounds while Gordon tallied 11 points and 11 boards.

LaBounty and Brodhead scored nine each while dealing with foul troubles and sophomore guard Austyn Capoeman came off the bench to provide a spark for Hoquiam with seven points and a team-high four steals.

Hoquiam shot 26% on 13-of-53 shooting while Aberdeen went 14 of 44 from the field (32%).

Aberdeen hit 7-of-24 free throws (29%) while Houqiam converted 18 of 31 from the line (58%).

The Grizzlies dominated the boards 51-29 while the two teams combined for 51 turnovers in the game, 26 for the Grizzlies to 25 for the Bobcats.

The win combined with Hoquiam’s 60-57 victory over Aberdeen on Dec. 12 at Aberdeen High School marks the first time since the 2018 season the Grizzlies swept the two-game season series over the Cats.

“It means a lot. We obviously haven’t done it in quite some time,” Gordon said of the season sweep. “I’m going to enjoy this.”

Both teams will be back in league play this week.

Aberdeen hosts W.F. West at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

Hoquiam matches up against Elma at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Elma High School.

Onalaska 56, Raymond-South Bend 48

Raymond-South Bend saw a comfortable halftime lead evaporate in a 56-48 loss to Onalaska on Monday at South Bend High School.

The Ravens (9-4) led by two after one quarter of play before taking control of the game with a 21-7 second quarter, thanks in large part to seven points by forward Ava Baugher and two 3-pointers by junior Kassie Koski.

But the RSB lead began to slip away in the third quarter as the Ravens scored just five points on three free throws and a Baugher field goal. At the end of the period, the Ravens’ 16-point halftime lead shrunk to four points at 42-38.

In the fourth quarter, Onalaska (10-1) completed the comeback, outscoring RSB 16-6 in the period led by Emalie Jacoby, who scored nine of her game-high 24 points in the period.

“In coach speak, this game was a tale of two halves and Onalaska won the second half by a huge margin,” RSB head coach Jason Koski said. “From my perspective, the first half was pretty and the second half was as dismal as it could be for us. Rushed shots, turnovers, lackadaisical defense and the worst part is lack of a competitive mindset to be able to right the ship. Good thing is we get to redeem ourselves Wednesday.”

RSB hosts Chief Leschi in a 2B Pacific League game at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in Raymond.

Onalaska 14 7 16 18 – 56

RSB 16 21 5 6 – 48

Scoring: Onalaska – Jacoby 24, D. Marshall 11, Sandridge 10, R. Marshall 6, Underhill 3, Hamilton 2. RSB – Koski 15, Baugher 11, Stigall 8, Pine-Isaksen 8, Kongbouakhay 6.
