Elma 67, Raymond-South Bend 62

Elma made plays down the stretch to pick up a 67-62 victory over Raymond-South Bend on Friday at Elma High School.

The Eagles (2-0 overall) led 58-44 heading into the fourth quarter, but behind the play of leading scorer Chris Quintana, the Ravens (0-2) rallied to tie the game.

Elma regained the lead in the final minute on a Tanner Moe free throw and pulled away when Isaac McGaffey scored off an offensive rebound with 12 seconds left to put the Eagles up by three.

“We escaped with a win. We had guys step up when we needed it the most,” said Elma head coach Matt Ferrier, who complemented the Ravens’ “athletic” zone defense. “We are incredibly fortunate to go home a winner. … They played a great game and pushed us to the limits. We were lucky to win.”

Lake Roosevelt 61, Hoquiam 39

Poor shooting led to Hoquiam’s 61-39 loss to Lake Roosevelt in a Native American Classic game on Friday at Wenatchee Valley College.

The Grizzlies (0-2) hit 16-of-53 shots in the game (30.2%), including 6 of 29 from the 3-point line (20.7%).

“Our offensive rebounding improved and we were competitive on the boards,” Hoquiam head coach Jeff Niemi said. “We didn’t make many (threes) and out of 29, about 23 of them were open threes. We just couldn’t hit them. I’m satisfied with our shot selection and I’m in some way encouraged with a couple of things we needed to improve on. But obviously, shooting 30% isn’t going to usually cut it most nights and that’s what happened tonight.”

Hoquiam guard Joey Bozich led the Grizzlies with 13 points and eight rebounds.

Lake Roosevelt (3-0), a perennial 2B State Tournament team, shot 43% from the floor on 24-of-56 shooting and benefited from 23 Grizzlies turnovers.

“That’s a few too many turnovers than we want to have,” said Niemi, who noted several of his team’s turnovers came on sideline inbound plays. “But they are a state-caliber pressing team and we actually handled their pressure solidly. … I’m actually kind of encouraged with how we handled a pretty good pressure team’s press. … Sometimes the other team forces you into turnovers and that definitely happened.”

Hoquiam continues play at the Native American Classic with a game against Chelan at 4 p.m. Saturday at Wenatchee Valley College.

Hoquiam 12 6 12 9 – 39

Lake Roosevelt 12 20 15 14 – 61

Scoring: Hoquiam – Bozich 13, Niemi 8, Maxfield 7, Tobar 5, Byron 4, Azeveda 2. LR – Alajandre 13, Egbort 13, Jordan 11, Louia 8, Kensler 7, Bush 5, Broadnax 4.

Ocosta 55, Pe Ell 32

Ocosta used its defense to beat Pe Ell 55-32 on Friday at Pe Ell High School.

The Wildcats (2-0) held the Trojans (2-1) to five points in the first quarter and nine points in the second half.

“Tonight was about our defense,” Ocosta head coach Jason Quinby said. “We played very good, physical defense and rebounded well tonight which was crucial as we didn’t shoot too well.”

Ocosta used its press defense at times to “jump start some offense,” according Quinby, and shut down the Trojans in the half court to hold Pe Ell scoreless in the third quarter.

”Our guys were locked and and played very disciplined most of the night with just a few breakdowns here and there,” Quinby said. “Very pleased with our defensive efforts.”

Ocosta was led by freshman Sonny Beard, who had a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

The Wildcats had 15 steals as a team led by Noah Prigmore with six, and grabbed 44 rebounds, 18 on the offensive glass.

Ocosta plays at Ilwaco in a non-league matchup at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
