Aberdeen boys edge Tumwater by one point
Led by another top finish by Henry Nelson and Cecil Gumaelius, Aberdeen won a three-team league meet over Tumwater and Centralia on Wednesday at Pioneer Park in Tumwater.
Nelson, a senior, placed first in the boys 5K varsity race with time of 16:33.33 followed by freshman teammate Gumaelius in second with a time of 16:52.64.
Freshman Toby Nelson (18:16.46 PR, 9th) and junior Ezekiel Olson (18:21.34 PR, 10th) each recorded personal-record times in the race.
Cats junior Johnathon Watkins (18:30.00 PR, 11th) also PR’d to round out Aberdeen’s team score of 34 points, finishing one better than Tumwater (34) and well ahead of Centralia (53).
“(The victory) was impressive since our typical No. 3 runner Jacob Hallak didn’t feel well and ran towards the back,” Aberdeen head coach Dennis Nelson said. “This was accomplished by huge PR’s from Toby, Zeke and John. Also the boys had to fight through monsoon style during the last portion of the race.”
In the girls race, Aberdeen super-sophomore Ailyn Haggard took the top spot with a time of 19:07.08, crossing the line nearly 50 seconds ahead of Tumwater’s Alexandra Broome (19:55.52, 2nd).
Sophomore Serenity Allread (25:57.29, 8th), freshman Taylor Hatton (26:30.88, 9th), junior Ines Horcajada (27:59.97, 12th) and junior Aitana de Vente Boix (29:07.47, 14th) placed for Aberdeen as the Bobcats finished with 35 points to finish second behind Centralia (32).
