Elma 26, Stevenson 7

Behind a big game from junior Isaac McGaffey, the Elma Eagles moved to 2-0 on the season with a 26-7 victory over Stevenson on Friday at Stevenson High School.

Elma junior quarterback/safety Isaac McGaffey had a huge game, throwing four touchdown passes – three to senior receiver Ethan Camus – and intercepting Stevenson quarterback Jude Travinski three times on defense.

Elma opened the scoring when McGaffey threw a strike to Camus for a 15-yard touchdown in the first quarter and took a 13-0 lead after one period of play when McGaffey hit receiver Colt Landstrom for a 13-yard score.

The Eagles capped off another scoring drive when McGaffey connected with Camus for a 22-yard touchdown and a 19-0 halftime lead.

Travinski hit receiver Skylar Pozel for a 4-yard touchdown to cut the Eagles’ lead to 19-7 entering the fourth quarter, but a 1-yard touchdown pass from McGaffey to Camus in the fourth quarter, put the finishing touch on Elma’s victory.

Elma’s offense frequently worked with a short field throughout the game as the Eagles defense intercepted Travinski four times.

Three of those picks were thanks to McGaffey, who had a total of 98 interception return yards in the game.

Elma senior linebacker Traden Carter also recorded an interception in the contest.

Stevenson (1-1 overall) had 142 total yards of offense and was just 3 of 22 (14%) on third and fourth-down conversions.

“The defense played really great. They were flying around,” Elma head coach Larry Raynes said. “Four turnovers and we held them to under 150 yards total, really good job by the defense.”

The Eagles amassed 216 total yards of offense, with McGaffey throwing for 133 yards on 12 of 18 passing without an interception.

Two games into his tenure as the Eagles starting quarterback, McGaffey is 24 of 35 passing (69%) for 270 yards and seven touchdowns without throwing an interception or taking a sack.

“He’s had a great two games,” Raynes said. “When I watched the film from the first week, he missed on one pass. … He’s pretty efficient and put the ball where he needs too. We had a couple deep shots that just missed or he would have had an even bigger game.”

Raynes added the three-sport standout has fit into the starting quarterback position quite naturally after making the switch from wide receiver.

“He’s a great athlete. … I’ve always thought he makes great decisions and you are kind of seeing that with him as the signal caller back there,” he said. “The ball is in his hands and he’s making good decisions. … He’s executing at a really high level.”

The Eagles also cleaned up its penalty problem from a week ago, trimming the amount to 10 penalties for 85 yards compared to 14 infractions last week.

“That’s a little bit better, but there is still work to do,” Raynes said.

Elma hosts Sequim at 7 p.m. on Friday at Davis Field.

Steliacoom 18, Aberdeen 0

Nothing went right for Aberdeen in an 18-0 loss to Steliacoom on Friday at Steliacoom High School.

The Bobcats (0-2) committed five turnovers and totaled negative-27 yards rushing due to several sacks against a Sentinels defensive front Aberdeen head coach Todd Bridge said was “strong and physical.”

Steliacoom quarterback Drew MacDonald threw for two touchdowns and ran for another to hand Aberdeen its second loss of the season.

“We’ve got a lot of inexperienced and untested young men out on the field. That’s not an excuse, it’s the reality. We’ve got to get better run blocking and tackling on the defense, although our defense played superlatively,” Bridge said. “Whenever you put a defense in that many horrible situations and only give up 3 TD, I tip my hat to our Defensive Coordinator, David Tarrence, and his staff for keeping MacDonald in check from picking us apart. “Offensively, If we can’t run the ball, even after our passing game is pulling defenders out of the box, we’re going to struggle down the road. And it’s not going to get any easier next week with Rochester.”

Aberdeen faces Rochester at 7 p.m. on Friday at Stewart Field in Aberdeen.

Ridgefield 21, Montesano 18

A late touchdown run spoiled Montesano’s bid for its first win of the young season in a 21-18 loss to Ridgefield on Friday at Ridgefield High School.

The Bulldogs (0-2) led 18-15 late in the fourth quarter but couldn’t keep the Spudders (2-0) from scoring on their final drive when Cly Stephens ran it in from 5-yards out with just 32 seconds left on the clock.

Monte was able to get the ball near midfield but time ran out and the Bulldogs dropped to 0-2 on the season.

“We hung in there. I was proud of the effort. We struggled stopping the run tonight and struggled running the ball tonight,” Monte head coach Terry Jensen said. “We did some good things, just not consistently enough. Offensively, we are struggling to move the ball in a consistent fashion.”

The Bulldogs trailed 9-0 in the first quarter after a Spudders touchdown followed by a Monte bad snap on a punt led to a safety.

The Bulldogs bounced back with a 2-yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Tyson Perry late in the first and took a 10-9 lead heading into halftime with kicker Cris Tobar booted a 37-yard field goal in the second quarter.

Trailing 15-10 entering the fourth quarter, Monte once again took a lead when Perry hit running back Terek Gunter for a 5-yard touchdown pass.

Monte had a chance to clinch late in the game, forcing a fourth-down play late in the fourth quarter.

But the Spudders offense converted to keep the drive alive. A few plays later, Stephens scored the game-winner for the Spudders.

Ridgefield dominated the time of possession and ran 72 plays from scrimmage, including a six-plus minute drive to score the eventual game-winning touchdown.

Montesano linebacker Kole Kjesbu had an interception and a fumble recovery while fellow linebacker Gabe Pyhala had a fumble recovery and a sack in the game.

Monte defensive lineman Logan Roberts and Christian Morris added a sack apiece for the Bulldogs defense.

“We haven’t played a complete game yet. We’ve got to do a better job and that starts with me,” Jensen said of the loss. “The effort is there, we’re just struggling to stop the run and run the ball and those are two things we’ve hung our hat on over the years. We’ve got to sit down, look at ourselves in the mirror and see where we go from here.”

The Bulldogs take on another 2A-class team in Black Hills at 7 p.m. on Friday in Tumwater.
