The first Friday of high school football on the Twin Harbors is complete. Here is a rundown of your local teams in action.

Elma 21, Centralia 14 (OT)

Elma had to sweat it out in earning a season-opening 21-14 victory in overtime against Centralia on Friday at Tiger Stadium in Centralia.

The Eagles (1-0 overall) jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter after a Centralia fumble deep in Tigers territory led to a short touchdown run by Elma senior running back Kale Reeves.

Elma then recovered a squib kick to regain possession and scored five plays later when senior quarterback Carter Studer hit junior receiver Ethan Camus for a 5-yard touchdown.

But Centralia (0-1) responded with an 11-play touchdown drive capped by a Dylan Mock 7-yard scoring run in the second quarter.

The Tigers tied the game in the third quarter by embarking on a nine-play, 80-yard drive culminating with a Kellen Rooklidge 4-yard TD run.

In overtime, Studer hit Camus on a whip route for a 5-yard touchdown to regain the lead.

On the Tigers’ ensuing possession, Rooklidge was stuffed behind the line of scrimmage by Elma defensive lineman Tanner Thompson. A subsequent false-start penalty pushed Centralia back to the Elma 33-yard line.

A pass for no gain followed by two incompletions ended the game, giving Elma a rousing victory and handing Centralia its 12th straight loss.

“We were playing pretty good in the beginning, then we got a little tired and started making mental mistakes that stalled our drives a little bit,” Elma co-head coach Larry Raynes said. “We had chances to open it up a little more, we just weren’t able to connect. … There was definitely some first-game nerves and a lot of players seeing the Friday night speed for the first time.”

Studer went 20-for-34 for 275 yards, two touchdowns and an interception to lead Elma.

Eagles senior receiver Jacob Meadows had a breakout game with eight catches for 187 yards.

Isaac Phillips and Thompson led the Eagles defense with 7.5 tackles apiece.

“It was awesome,” Raynes said of the victory. “The sideline toward the end of the game was really loud and excited, getting into it. Afterward in the locker room, seeing the smiles on their faces was awesome.”

Elma plays at Cascade Christian at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Montesano 44, Black Hills 7

Montesano wasn’t having any thoughts of losing a second-consecutive opener to Black Hills.

On Friday evening at Jack Rottle Field in Montesano, the Bulldogs took care of business.

Senior running back Gabe Bodwell rushed for over 100 yards and senior quarterback Jaxson Wilson played a part in three touchdowns as Monte walloped the Wolves 44-7.

Paced by a defense that held Black Hills (0-1) to negative rushing yardage through the first three quarters of play, Monte (1-0) jumped out to a 44-0 lead before a late touchdown in the final seconds of the game prevented the shutout.

“I thought we played really well on defense,” Montesano head coach Terry Jensen said. “Our defense was outstanding and they set everything up for us.”

While the Bulldogs defense didn’t force a turnover, it didn’t matter as Monte held Black Hills to 133 total yards – 19 of those on the ground – and sacked Black Hills quarterback Jaxsen Beck three times, one each from Justin Damasiewicz, Cam Taylor and Gabe Bodwell.

The work on the defensive end put Monte’s offense in good shape to score points, and the Bulldogs offense obliged.

Monte opened the scoring on a short run by senior running back Tucker Eaton in the first quarter followed by two long touchdown tosses from Wilson to senior receiver Bode Poler.

Wilson followed with an 11-yard touchdown run and the Bulldogs took a 28-0 lead into the half when kicker Felix Romero split the uprights from 37 yards out with five seconds left in the second quarter.

Scoring runs by Eaton and Poler in the third quarter put Monte up 44-0 before a late Wolves touchdown with five seconds left in the game spoiled the shutout.

Bodwell ran for 120 yards on 14 carries as Monte ran for 257 yards on the ground and totalled 415 yards of offense.

Wilson went 6-for-9 with 158 yards passing – all in the first half – with Poler catching two passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns.

Monte linebacker Gabe Pyhala led the Bulldogs with seven tackles.

Though Monte only had 30 penalty yards, several mistakes – including dropped snaps, missed assignments and poor execution – were areas of concern for Jensen, who said his defense’s effort helped mask those issues.

“I’m really happy with our effort and how hard we played,” he said. “We made a lot of mistakes tonight and maybe our defense helped cover some of those up. We’ve got a lot of work to do still, but it’s always better to have a lot of work to do with a win than a lot of work to do with a loss.”

Monte takes on Aberdeen at 7 p.m. on Friday in Aberdeen.

Pe Ell-Willapa Valley 26, Mossyrock 8

Pe Ell-Willapa Valley ran off 26 unanswered points to claim a 26-8 victory over Mossyrock on Friday at Mossyrock High School.

Mossyrock (0-1) drove downfield on its first possession of the game and scored when quarterback Easton Kolb hit receiver Peyton McClure for a 17-yard touchdown.

But from there on out, it was all PWV as the next four touchdowns belonged to the Titans (1-0).

PWV quarterback Tyson Portmann scored on a 10-yard run to make it an 8-6 game in favor of Mossyrock after one quarter.

The Titans took the lead when quarterback Nathan Fluke hit receiver Blaine King for a 25-yard touchdown and a 12-8 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, Fluke and King connected again, this time for a 29-yard touchdown pass and a 20-8 lead after the two-point conversion.

Cody Strozyk rounded out the scoring with a 13-yard run in the fourth quarter for the 26-8 victory, the first under new head coach Nate Smith.

“It was great. It’s just a great experience,” Smith said of his first victory as varsity head coach. “I think our kids started off pretty flat and on their heels, which is why (Mossyrock) scored that first touchdown, but we’ve got some pretty gritty kids that dug in and played some hard four quarters.”

Senior running back Blake Howard led PWV with 83 yards on 16 carries with Strozyk adding 51 yards on seven carries.

Fluke went 7-for-9 for 110 yards and two touchdowns, both two King, who had three catches for 65 yards.

“I think the kids have played long enough together, they know each other and they knew what it was going to take to win the ballgame,” Smith said. “They responded really well.”

The game was the first 11-man game for Mossyrock, which competes in 8-man football, since 2019.

PWV hosts Adna at 7 p.m. Friday in Menlo.

Toledo 42, Raymond-South Bend 35

RSB (0-1) took an early lead on a 54-yard touchdown run from Ferrill Johnson with just over a minute of game time elapsed.

But Toledo (1-0) scored 28 straight points to take a 28-7 lead at the 9:41 mark of the second quarter.

The subsequent two-point conversion tied the game at 35-all with just 50 seconds left on the clock.
