Sequim 28, Elma 7

Elma’s offense struggled in a 28-7 loss to Sequim on Friday at Davis Field in Elma.

The Eagles (2-1 overall) managed just 119 yards of offense and had just five first downs en route to suffering their first loss of the season.

Trailing 6-0 after Wolves quarterback Zeke Schmadeke ran for a 3-yard touchdown in the first period, Elma got on the scoreboard when linebacker Blaize Salazar scooped up a Wolves fumble and scampered 23 yards for a touchdown.

Elma kicker Matthew Wood’s subsequent PAT put Elma up 7-6, a lead the Eagles took into halftime.

But the second half belonged to Sequim.

On a 4th-and-12 play deep in Elma territory, Schmadeke rolled out to his left and scored on a 12-yard run as the Wolves regained the lead 12-6 in the third quarter.

Sequim would put the game away in the fourth period when Schmadeke hit Malachi Hampton for a 5-yard touchdown followed later by a Liam Walker 18-yard touchdown run, capping off Elma’s 28-7 loss.

The Eagles had 53 rushing yards on 18 attempts while junior quarterback Isaac McGaffey went 7 for 19 for 66 yards and two interceptions.

Elma was hampered by 10 penalties for 77 yards and went 0 for 8 on third down conversions and 1 for 6 on fourth down.

Montesano 56, Black Hills 7

The production Montesano had been looking for arrived on Friday with a 56-7 blowout win over Black Hills in Tumwater.

Two explosive kickoff returns by senior Mason Rasmussen, the Bulldogs (1-2) got out to a blistering start and blew the game open with a 35-point second quarter.

On the first play of the game, Rasmussen took the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown to stake Monte to a 7-0 lead.

After Black Hills (1-2) tied the game when running back Jacob Weller scored on a 4-yard run, Rasmussen went back to back, returning the subsequent kickoff 99 yards for a score.

“That really gave us a spar I think,” Monte head coach Terry Jensen said. “We hit some really big plays tonight.”

Several of those big plays came in the Bulldogs’ five-touchdown second quarter.

Junior quarterback Tyson Perry hit receiver Toren Crites for a 77-yard touchdown followed later in the half by a Zach Timmons scoring run of 28-yards.

Three more touchdown runs by receiver Toren Crites, running back Gabe Pyhala and Timmons capped off Monte’s prodigious second quarter and put the Bulldogs up 49-7 at halftime.

A 13-yard scoring run by Crites in the third quarter sealed it for Monte, giving the Bulldogs their first win of the season and first win in four games dating back to last year.

“We definitely played better. Kind of hard to tell because Black Hills is pretty young. We have to continue to improve,” Jensen said. “It was fun to get a win. It’s fun when you lost three in a row dating back to last year. You forget how winning feels and it was great to see our kids happy and excited at the end of the game, being there for each other and looking like a family like we usually are.”

Montesano hosts 2B-powerhouse Napavine at 7 p.m. on Friday.

In the second quarter, Titans safety Cody Mican scooped up a Toledo fumble and ran 55 yards for a touchdown to put PWV up 23-6.

Mary M. Knight 38, Lake Quinault 31

Lake Quinault dropped its season-opening game 38-31 to Mary M. Knight on Saturday in Amanda Park.

The Elks (0-1) trailed 38-31 late in the game and had the ball with two minutes left to play, but bad snaps and mistakes killed their final drive, giving the Owls (1-1) their first win over Lake Quinault in the past six meetings.

“As the saying goes, sometimes you just run out of time, and we just ran out of time,” Lake Quinault head coach Melvyn Houtz said. “A couple of missed snaps and a couple of miscues and that pretty much sealed our fate.”

Despite missing nearly half his players due to injury and ineligibility issues, Houtz said the blame lies on his shoulders.

“If I would have made the adjustments quick enough, we could’ve pulled this one off,” said Houtz, noting the Elks didn’t switch to a spread offense in time to pull off the win. “We’re missing key players, it’s not an excuse. … I don’t really go spread, but I should’ve went to the spread more often and that’s where I made the biggest mistake as a coach. If we would’ve went spread and opened it up a little more, the score would’ve been different.”

The Elks were led by senior quarterback Zach Leavitt with two touchdown passes.

Edwin Morfin also threw a touchdown for Lake Quinault while junior Blake Hartt caught a touchdown pass for the Elks.

Lake Quinault hosts Clallam Bay at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
