Montesano 55, Shelton 0

Montesano played near-perfect football en route to a 55-0 drubbing over Shelton on Friday at Jack Rottle Field in Montesano.

The Bulldogs (5-0 overall) closed out its non-league schedule in grand fashion, jumping all over the Highclimbers (1-4) from the opening whistle and delivering early haymakers.

Monte got rolling on the first play of the game when sophomore Toren Crites electrified the home crowd with a 77-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

A few minutes later, receiver Mason Rasmussen got past his defender and hauled in a 41-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Tyson Perry.

Montesano scored its second offensive touchdown a mere 16 seconds later when sophomore running back Terek Gunter scored on a 46-yard run.

Crites followed by intercepting Shelton quarterback Gabe Conklin and returned it 23 yards for a touchdown and a 28-0 lead with just under three minutes to go in the quarter.

“We started really fast,” Montesano head coach Terry Jensen said, noting his team had two touchdowns after just four offensive plays in the first-quarter swarm. “We jumped on them pretty fast.”

Montesano senior running back Gabe Bodwell scored a touchdown on a 19-yard run in the second quarter to put the Bulldogs up 35-0 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Bodwell scored on runs of two and 47 yards for a commanding 48-0 lead.

Felix Romero added a touchdown on a 14-yard run in the fourth quarter to round out Monte’s scoring in the game.

The Bulldogs had 344 total yards, most of that coming on the ground with 265 rushing yards.

Bodwell led the way with 13 carries for 138 yards and three touchdowns.

Monte’s defense held Shelton to 165 total yards – including a mere eight rushing yards – and intercepted Conklin four times, with defensive backs Bode Poler, Royce Gourdin and linebacker Romero joining Crites with a pick.

“I thought it was probably our most complete game so far this season,” Jensen said. “We scored on special teams, we scored on defense, we scored on offense. It was just an outstanding game. … Still not a complete game, but it’s as close as we’ve come so far this year.”

Jensen added a key to the Bulldogs’ performance was due in large part to a coaching focus on playing a full 48 minutes.

“The big emphasis this week was we need to play four quarters,” he said. “We were pushing that on our kids and they responded really well.”

Montesano hosts Eatonville in the Bulldogs’ league-opener at 6 p.m. Friday.

Aberdeen 17, Black Hills 10

For the first time in 19 years, the Aberdeen Bobcats won a football game at Tumwater Stadium.

Led by consistent defensive play and a strong running game, the Bobcats earned a key 2A Evergreen League victory with a 17-10 win over Black Hills on Friday.

The Bobcats (4-1, 2-0 2A Evergreen) took a first-quarter lead when standout senior running back and league offensive MVP candidate Aidan Watkins broke free for a 58-yard touchdown run.

But the Wolves (0-5, 0-3), rallied to take the lead in the second quarter on a short touchdown pass from quarterback Jaxsen Beck to receiver Maddox Hodge followed by a 25-yard field goal from kicker Jude Bender.

Trailing 10-7 after halftime, Aberdeen tied the game when Edmond Brown drilled a 27-yard field goal with 8:19 to go in the third quarter.

Brown’s field goal turned out to be key as the defenses dominated the game, with points being at a premium.

“Edmond Brown’s field goal came at a pivotal point in the game during the third quarter which gave our offense some respite,” Aberdeen head coach Todd Bridge said.

The biggest play of the game came with just over five minutes remaining when Aberdeen running back Marcus Hale sped away for a 78-yard touchdown run. Brown’s extra point put the Cats up 17-10 late in the game.

Aberdeen’s defense held firm the rest of the way to preserve the 2A Evergreen League victory.

The Bobcats had 248 yards rushing – 134 from Watkins – and held Black Hills to minus-15 yards on the ground.

Black Hills did most of its work through the air, with Beck throwing for 230 yards on 22-of-33 passing.

But the Bobcats defense – led by the play of defensive lineman JaBron Brooks and defensive end Nolan Cook – covered and tackled well and pressured Beck after the break, leading to the second-half shutout.

“We coaches preached all week about two things – that we’ve got to mature as football team and not fall into a trap game and that Black Hills was going to give us a Super Bowl effort, which they did,” Bridge said of the hard-fought victory. ” It wasn’t pretty, but it’s a road win and we’ll take it.”

Aberdeen’s march toward securing a playoff spot continues when the Bobcats host 2A powerhouse Tumwater at 7 p.m. Friday at Stewart Field.

Lake Quinault’s defense had a big day in an 85-33 win over Northwest Christian on Saturday in Tacoma.

The Elks (4-0 overall, 1B Coastal) recorded seven interceptions as a team, four of which were returned for touchdowns in the 6-man contest.

“It was kind close in the first half, but the coaches and I made some halftime adjustments and we just blew the top off,” Lake Quinault head coach Melvyn Houtz said. “(Defense) has been our weakness and the biggest concern we’ve had. … We were ready for (Evergreen Lutheran) to spread us out and our defensive backs stepped up in a big way.”

Hermosillo led the Elks offense with 300-plus rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns.

Lake Quinault led 40-33 at halftime.

The victory was the 12th straight 1B Coastal (6-man) League win for the Elks.
