GIRLS PREP SOCCER
Aberdeen 5, Hoquiam 1
In a matchup of two of the youngest teams in southwest Washington, the Aberdeen Bobcats earned a 5-1 victory over rival Hoquiam on Thursday at Stewart Field in Aberdeen.
The Bobcats (1-1-1 overall) picked up their first win of the season led by their three seniors. Midfielder Delaney Shoemaker scored a pair of goals – both assisted by senior forward Abby Mainio – and the Cats got a goal from senior midfielder Scotlyn Lecomte in the win.
Shoemaker put Aberdeen up 1-0 with a goal in the fourth minute off a pass from Mainio and Lecomte doubled the lead when she beat her defender and made a nice pivot and against-the-grain shot for a goal in the 20th minute.
Hoquiam (0-2), which features just two seniors and eight eighth graders on the roster, responded when one of those middle-schoolers, midfielder Maddi Quigg, broke free for a run down the sideline and was fouled from behind after turning into the Aberdeen box.
Hoquiam eighth-grade midfielder Iza Frye converted the subsequent penalty kick to make it a 2-1 game in the 24th minute.
Aberdeen junior forward/midfielder Miley Anderson scored from in close as Hoquiam struggled to clear the ball, putting the Cats up 3-1 just before halftime.
The Bobcats wasted little time extending the lead to three goals in the second half when Mainio hit Shoemaker again with another pinpoint pass for a goal in the 44th minute.
After the bulk of the second half went by with Aberdeen peppering Hoquiam sophomore keeper and co-captain Emily Brodhead with shots, the Bobcats scored their fifth and final goal when junior defender Joie Mayberry raced down the far sideline and floated what appeared to be a long cross in toward the net. The ball sailed over Brodhead and tucked just inside the far post for an eye-catching goal in the final minute of play.
For a young Aberdeen team that has had its opportunities to score in its two previous games this season but has lacked the finishing touch, Cats head coach Larry Fleming saw some positives but added his team still has work to do.
“Sometimes it takes awhile to score and their goalie did a good job,” he said. “But the last three games, we’ve had so many 1-on-1 opportunities where it’s just us and the goalie, if we just release the ball on the ground a little earlier, it’s a goal. But we wait until the goalie closes it down and it’s too late. … The frustrating part is I know we are going to need those goals come league play. We’re going to work on it. The good thing is I think we have pretty good first touch, so we controlled the ball and we gave them very few opportunities to score.”
Brodhead kept the Grizzlies in the game with 20 saves as Aberdeen’s offense had its way with a young, inexperienced Hoquiam team.
“I probably only have six girls that have ever even played soccer before. The majority of our team is brand new,” said Schmid, who had two of those six players unavailable on Thursday. “Overall, I’m completely impressed. … Regardless if you’ve never played before, stepping in and playing a 2A team, that’s intimidating. They kept their attitude positive and were up for any challenge and as a coach, that’s all I could ask for.”
Aberdeen hosts Tenino at 3 p.m. on Saturday in Aberdeen.
Hoquiam takes on Ocosta at 6 p.m. on Monday.
Hoquiam 1 0 – 1
Aberdeen 3 2 – 5

W.F. West 4, Elma 1
Elma dropped to 0-2 in the early season with a 4-1 loss to W.F. West on Thursday in Chehalis.
Playing one of the toughest non-league schedules in the school’s recent history, Elma (0-2) struggled in the first half against a Bearcats team Eagles head coach Evan Valentine said was “big, fast and physical.”
W.F. West scored three times in the first half to take a 3-0 lead by halftime before Elma got on the board when midfielder Miley Seaberg send a pass to forward Beta Valentine, who cutback and scored on a shot in the 63rd minute.
Elma’s comeback hopes were dashed when the Bearcats scored again approximately 10 minutes later and held the Eagles scoreless the rest of the way.
“They’re a tough opponent,” Elma head coach Evan Valentine said, noting the Eagles are opening the season with several state-playoff level opponents. “It’s by far the toughest schedule we’ve had in my six years coaching. … It’s a trial by fire.”
Elma hosts Tumwater at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Davis Field in Elma.
Elma 0 1 – 1
W.F. West 3 1 – 4
