GIRLS WRESTLING
Bobcats third
OTHELLO — Winning all five of her matches by pin, Aberdeen freshman Tatum Heikkila won the 190-pound championship at the Othello Girls Wrestling Invitational on Saturday.
Heikkila concluded by pinning Mount Baker’s Shelby Sears in 1:19. Her showing helped Aberdeen to a third-place finish, trailing only Othello and Sunnyside.
“Tatum had a great tournament,” Bobcat coach Craig Yakovich said. “She works hard at practice and it shows on the mat. I couldn’t be more impressed by her rapid progression at this sport.”
The Bobcats placed seven in the top six of the 32-woman bracket. Savannah Chandler was third at 145 pounds and Camryn Cook fifth at 140. Faith Cardenas (105), Maya Kuhl (130), MacKayla Waltee (155) and Karli Heikkila (170) each took sixth.
“To bring home a third-place trophy and have seven of our eight girls place in the top six was beyond what I was hoping for,” Yakovich said.
Five other Bobcats — Ashlyn Yakovich (110), Rian Tingwall (125), Hannah Jacobs (130), Ciera Skelly (140) and Thalia Cook (155) — each placed third in the Napavine Tiger Invitational, also on Saturday.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Gulls 58, Navigators 55
LACEY – Devine Sovannavanh blocked a game-tying 3-point attempt as Raymond held off Northwest Christian in a Pacific 2B League contest Monday at Lacey.
Despite struggling with their shooting from close range and the foul line, the Gulls (4-7, 6-9) led narrowly for most of the way.
Taevon Hubbard made one of two free throws to give them a three-point lead with eight seconds remaining. Souvannavanh’s block clinched the victory.
“We were able to do just enough at the end to close it out,” Raymond coach Mike Tully reported. “I was happy that we were able to get a league road win in a very tough place to play.”
Marcus Anderson topped the Gulls with 14 points and five rebounds. Hubbard had five assists and a couple of steals to go with his 13 points.
Raymond visits North Beach on Wednesday.
