GIRLS PREP SOCCER
Tenino 3, Hoquiam 2
For the second-straight game, Hoquiam fell just short of a league victory with a 3-2 loss to Tenino on Monday at Tenino High School.
The Grizzlies (1-12 overall, 0-7 1A Evergreen) took an early 1-0 lead when eighth grader Avery Brodhead sent a through ball to fellow eighth grader RenaéJah Burtenshaw, who scored her third goal in two games to put Hoquiam ahead.
Tenino’s Callie Mickelson tied the game in the 36th minute, but the Grizzlies regained the lead three minutes later when senior Chloey Dietrick scored off an assist from senior Paige Shope to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.
Tenino (8-7-1, 2-5) tied the game on a goal by Abagail Archibald in the 50th minute and took the lead on a Holly Thoren goal in the 75th minute to hand Hoquiam the loss.
For a Hoquiam team that struggled to field a team multiple times throughout the season due to injury, illness and lower roster numbers, the second-straight competitive performance validates the move by head coach Corri Schmid to bring up a host of eighth graders to fill out the ranks.
“Having numbers helps. Having subs where you can get people rests when they need it,” Schmid said. “We have numbers on our side now and that really helps us be a little bit more competitive.”
Hoquiam closes out its season with a Senior Night celebration against Montesano at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Olympic Stadium.
