Hoquiam 1, Toutle Lake 0

Hoquiam picked up its first win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Toutle Lake on Monday at Olympic Stadium in Hoquiam.

With just over 10 minutes left in a scoreless tie, Hoquiam eighth grader Bethany Betancourth got the ball just outside of the Toutle Lake 18-yard box, dribbled in and took a shot that hit the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

The Grizzlies outshot Toutle Lake 5-1 in the game to earn their first victory of the season.

“The girls had fun tonight, they needed this win,” Hoquiam head coach Corri Schmid said. “I’m looking forward to seeing the growth we make as a team throughout the season.”

Aberdeen 2, Rochester 1

Aberdeen rallied for two goals late in the game to beat Rochester 2-1 on Saturday at Stewart Field in Aberdeen.

After a scoreless first half that saw Aberdeen gain the better of possession but kept off the scoreboard after solid Rochester goal keeping, the Bobcats fell behind when a failure to clear a corner kick led to a Warriors goal in the 55th minute.

Ten minutes later, the Bobcats knotted up the score when senior forward Abby Mainio sent the ball to Shay Dulap, who quickly found senior midfielder Scotlyn Lecomte, who scored from 15 yards away to tie the game.

Aberdeen took the lead when Arani Garcia sent a cross to Lecomte, who ripped a shot that deflected off a Warriors defender and bounced over the Rochester keeper for a 2-1 lead with 12 minutes to play.

Better Bobcats passing in the second half led to Aberdeen holding the lead for good to pick up the victory.

“We started a little slow but picked it up in the second half, being more aggressive and passing with much more accuracy,” Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said. “Not giving the ball away so easily in the second half was the difference in the match.”

Anni Devine picked up the win in goal for Aberdeen.

Fleming cited the play of Hana Lessard and Kendalynn Garman on defense and Garcia who “had a good game off the bench.”

Aberdeen plays a 2A Evergreen League game against Tumwater at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in Tumwater.
