A typical mid-week game turned out to be a backdrop for school history in Ocosta’s 3-1 win over North Beach on Wednesday at Ocosta High School.

While Ocosta (4-1 overall) won the match 25-15, 15-13, 28-30 and 30-28, Noel Cuzdey was making history. The Wildcats senior libero recorded 39 digs in the match, breaking the school record of 34 previously held by Daynah Harris set in 2009.

“Noel was all over the floor tonight and as a result broke our school record for digs in a match,” Ocosta head coach Erin Snider said. “This kid works her tail off every day. She really showed off her skills tonight.”

Ocosta middle hitter Anna Davis and outside hitter Jolissa Schlegel led the Wildcats in kills with 16 and 15, respectively, while setter Ava Tucker and Millie Tucker combined for 32 assists.

Millie Tucker was a perfect 29 for 29 from the service line with 15 digs in the game.

“North Beach did not give up after losing the first two sets, they stepped on the floor in set three and attacked the ball very well,” Snider said. “Their hitters put our defense to work tonight. I’m very pleased with the composure of my team, they kept calm and focused.”

Ocosta will play its third match in as many days when it takes on Naselle in a 1B Coastal League game at 7 p.m. on Thursday in Westport.

North Beach (1-3) hosts Ilwaco in a 2B Pacific League game at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Montesano 3, Raymond-South Bend 0

Montesano defeated Raymond-South Bend in straight sets on Wednesday at Raymond High School.

Montesano (5-2) tweaked its lineup to create better backline play, leading to the 25-16, 25-12 and 25-15 victory over the Ravens (1-4).

“The girls played well tonight,” Monte head coach Cindy Wecker said. “We have been struggling a bit on serve-receive, so we made a couple of adjustments yesterday in practice and it paid off. The team seemed to be more confident in this passing formation and being confident is half of the battle. ”

Senior outside hitter Kalia Hatton led Monte with 16 kills, 27 digs and three blocks while senior setter Karissa Otterstetter had 22 assists, six kills and 13 digs for the Bulldogs.

Multiple Monte players had double-digit digs in the game, including Liv Robinson (22 digs), Bentley Warne (20 digs) and Grace Gooding (17 digs).

“We played well at times, showing a lot of improvement. Montesano is a strong program and they have some good athletes,” RSB head coach Julie Jewell said. “I was pleased at how scrappy we were at times. There were times our offense struggled and Montesano attacked our right side defense effectively. We know what we have to work on to continue improving. Ava Baugher and Kassie Koski and Fatima Delgado had good all-around games.”

Monte opens league play with a match against Tenino at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.
