Elma 3, Raymond-South Bend 0

Elma got a pair of goals from Cason Seaberg en route to a 3-0 win over Raymond-South Bend on Friday in Elma.

The Eagles (1-1 overall, 1-0 1A Evergreen) took the lead when freshman midfielder Ivan Ramirez played a ball forward to Seaberg, who pulled it down inside the box and scored in the 29th minute.

Less than a minute into the second half, Seaberg scored off a throw-in from senior midfielder Jose Perez to double Elma’s lead.

Late in the second half, Seaberg worked a give-and-go play with Ramirez and was pulled down from behind in the box, drawing a penalty.

Elma senior Amador Ramirez slotted home the penalty kick to complete the scoring at 3-0 in the 74th minute.

Elma head coach Carson Seaberg commended the performances of his son Cason and Ivan Ramirez.

“(Cason) had about seven shots on goal and created three goals out of those seven. So he had a really good game,” Coach Seaberg said. “Ivan played a really good game for us. This was his second varsity contest and first league game and he did really well.”

Coach Seaberg also cited the play of sophomore center back Matthew Wood and junior left fullback Theo Flores for playing well in new positions.

“Matthew Wood made some very crucial stops there on the back line and Theo Flores really controlled his side of the field,” Coach Seaberg said. “I’m very proud of the way they played.”

Elma keepers Tyler Keith and Tanner Thompson combined to earn the shutout.

Elma hosts Tenino in a league game at 6 p.m. on Monday.

Aberdeen dropped its league opener with a 2-1 loss – 5-3 on penalty kicks – to W.F. West on Friday in Chehalis.

The Bobcats (1-2 overall, 0-1 2A Evergreen) found itself dealing with a physical Bearcats team on an uneven grass surface, leading to Aberdeen playing defense to keep the game scoreless through the first 20 minutes of the game.

Aberdeen began to win and keep possession later in the first half, playing even with W.F. West until the Bearcats scored on a deflected cross in the 33rd minute.

In the second half, Aberdeen forward Elmer Torres got around three Bearcats defenders and sent a cross to the far post. Aberdeen’s Freddy Hernandez collected the ball and poked it past the Bearcats keeper to tie the game at 1-1.

The Bobcats continued to pressure the W.F. West goal through the remainder of the second half, but failed to take the lead as shots by Torres and Marc Avila were off the mark.

After two scoreless overtime periods, W.F. west converted all five of its penalty kicks in the shootout to hand Aberdeen a loss in the 2A Evergreen Conference opener.

“Although we were missing four players due to grades, the boys played well at a tough venue and almost pulled off the win,” Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said.

Fleming commended the play of Angel Espinosa and Isaiah Johnson in the back as well as Torres and Juan Serrano.

The Bobcats JV team won 5-0 on Friday, with Cristhian Mendoza (4 goals) and Ben Garcia (goal) scoring for Aberdeen.

Ricky Granados (3 assists) and Oscar Leiva (assist) also got on the stat sheet while Trino Villar was credited by Bobcats assistant coach Luis Soto for having a strong game.
