Prep Roundup: Elma, Montesano, Aberdeen boys golf teams win on Wednesday

Elma, Montesano and Aberdeen boys golf teams picked up early-season wins as we review Wednesday’s Twin Harbor prep sports.

BOYS PREP GOLF

Elma 184, Tenino 215

Elma remained unbeaten on the season with an impressive 184-215 win over Tenino on Wednesday at the Tahoma Valley Golf Club in Yelm.

Elma was led by standout Robby Allen, who shot a 1-over par 36, parring eight of the nine holes he played on the course Eagles head coach Collin McMaster dubbed “a tricky course for first-time players with all the elevation changes and hazards.”

“Great win for the boys tonight. … They gritted one out, even on a wet course after all of the overnight rain,” McMaster said. “Robby turned in his best performance of the year.”

Allen earned Medalist of the Match for the third time in as many meets this season, with Brody Palmer (48), Trey Yeager (49) and Cole Niemi (51) rounding out the Eagles’ top-four scores.

Elma (184) – Allen 36, Palmer 48, Yeager 49, Niemi 51.

Tenino (215) – Baxter 45, Gore 46, Hart 61, Robinson 63.

Montesano 181, Hoquiam 213

Montesano defeated Hoquiam 181-213 on Wednesday at the Highland Golf Course in Cosmopolis.

Montesano’s Colton Grubb won Medalist of the Match with a low 9-hole round of 42.

Ayhdn Sauer (46), Aaron Black (46) and Cayden Grubb (47) rounded out Monte’s top four, with Rufus Krasowski missing the scoreboard with a sub-50 score of 49.

Hoquiam was led by Skyler Dawson’s 50 as head coach Chase Taylor saw a vast improvement in the Grizzlies’ second match of the season.

“We dropped 45 strokes in a week,” Taylor said. “The kids continued to compete and grow. A good deal of improvement over last week.”

Montesano (181) – Col. Grubb 42, Sauer 46, Black 46, Cay. Grubb 47.

Aberdeen 256, Centralia 285

Aberdeen defeated Centralia 256-285 on Wednesday at Riverside Golf Club in Chehalis.

The Bobcats were led by Nick Benson (48) and Trevon Maynard, each carding sub-50 rounds over nine holes of golf.

Spencer Hill (50), Nolan Hood (53) also made the scorecard with William Yee and Tyce Greene each scoring a 56 for Aberdeen’s final tally.

Aberdeen (256) – Benson (48), Maynard (49), Hill (50), Hood (53), Yee (56-tie), Greene (56-tie).

Centralia (285) – Fagerness (41), Johnson (52), Henning (59), Guthrie (66), Howard (67).

GIRLS PREP SWIMMING

Aberdeen wins 2A Evergreen Relays

Led by strong performances from its 200-medley and 850-freestyle relay teams, the Aberdeen Bobcats placed first at the 2A Evergreen Relays on Wednesday at the Grays Harbor YMCA in Hoquiam.

The Bobcats scored 102 points to outpace second-place Shelton (86 points) and Black Hills (56, 3rd).

Aberdeen earned four first-place finishes in varsity races, led by the 200 medley relay team of senior Mija Hood, junior Wendy Neil, senior Ava Benn and senior Emma Mullins, which placed first with a time of 2:12.57.

Aberdeen coaches also cited the performance of the 850-freestyle relay team of freshman Gabby Orona (50 yards), junior Rylei Buchanan (100), sophomore Zander Jaquez (200) and junior Isabella Melville (500), which also placed first with a time of 12:32.32.

“All the girls swam with heart and intensity today and we as coaches couldn’t be more proud of them,” said Aberdeen head coach Anne Eisele. “This is going to be a great season with a fun group of swimmers.”

Aberdeen will compete in the Mark Morris Sprint Pentathlon on Saturday in Longview.

GIRLS PREP SOCCER

Kalama 4, Elma 3

Elma lost its season-opening game 4-3 to Kalama on Tuesday at Kalama High School.

Elma senior forward Beta Valentine recorded a hat trick in the game, scoring a goal off crosses by Valerie Echeverria in the 12th and 34th minutes followed by a goal off a Miley Seaberg cross in the 44th minute.

Kalama won on a free-kick goal in the final minutes of the game.

“We had some good build-up play, but we have some new players and some things to figure out,” Elma head coach Evan Valentine said.
