Elma rallied for two runs in the final frame to earn a 6-5 win over Woodland on Wednesday at Woodland High School.

Elma (3-0 overall) scored three runs in the top half of the first inning, highlighted by RBI singles from catcher Raelynn Weld and pitcher Keira White to take the early lead.

The Eagles held a 4-1 advantage after back-to-back doubles from right fielder Chloe Donais and shortstop Aubree Simmons produced a run in the fourth inning.

In the circle, White limited the Beavers (2-2) to one unearned run on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts through five innings pitched.

Sophomore Ashlynn Weld came in to relieve White in the bottom of the sixth and ran into trouble.

A leadoff triple by junior Madison Walker followed by an Emma Barrow double made it a 4-2 ballgame.

Barrow then came home to score one of five Elma errors in the game to trim the Eagles’ lead to one at 4-3.

With the bases loaded later in the frame, Weld struck out Addi Christensen and was one out away from preserving the lead, but a passed ball allowed two runs to score as the Beavers would take a sudden 5-4 lead and needed just three outs to hand Elma its first loss of the young season.

Senior outfielder Mia Monroe led off the seventh with a walk, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball.

Ashlynn Weld bunted back to Christensen just in front of home plate and reached first safely, with Monroe holding at third.

After a Raelynn Weld pop out to short, White got the job done with a fielder’s choice ground out to first, scoring Monroe to tie the game at 5-5.

With the bases loaded and two outs, left fielder Emily Comer worked a bases-loaded walk to push Ashlynn Weld across for the go-ahead run.

Ashlynn Weld would work around a two-out walk in the seventh, getting Barrow to pop out to Lynsee Bednarik at third for the final out of the game.

“This is why we play non-league games, to put ourselves in game like situations that you can’t always simulate in practice,” Elma head coach Ashley Stancil said. “I thought we made some pretty uncharacteristic mistakes and as frustrating as that is, we also got to see who stepped up when things got rough and pulled everyone together.”

Ashlynn Weld led the Elma offense with three hits – two for doubles – and two runs scored.

The Eagles had five players with multiple hits in the game.

Elma’s defense committed five errors, leading to three unearned runs for Woodland.

The Eagles open league play at Rochester at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
