BOYS PREP BASKETBALL

Tenino 55, Elma 43

Elma’s chance at a league title slipped away with a 55-43 loss to Tenino on Wednesday at Tenino High School.

Needing a win to force a share of the 1A Evergreen League title with the Beavers (12-4 overall, 7-1 1A Evergreen), Elma (11-8, 4-3) scored less than 50 points for the first time in seven games, leading to its second-straight league loss.

The Eagles trailed 23-21 at the half and 34-32 entering the fourth quarter, but the Beavers owned the final eight minutes of the game, paced by nine points from league MVP front-runner Noah Schow, giving Tenino the outright 1A Evergreen League title and top playoff seed.

Elma’s offense struggled to put the ball in the hoop. The Eagles went 20 of 56 from the field (36%), including 3 for 19 from 3-point range (16%), and attempted just four free throws in the game without a make.

Elma’s defense helped to keep the Eagles in the game. Aside from Schow, who had a game-high 33 points, only three additional Beavers scored in the game.

Elma had 23 rebounds, 11 assists and one steal as a team while committing 13 turnovers and 14 personal fouls.

Elma was led by senior post Carter Studer, who scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds.

No other Eagles player scored more than eight points in the game.

With the loss, Elma sits in a second-place tie with Montesano in the 1A Evergreen League.

The Eagles closed out the regular season with a league matchup against Eatonville Friday in Elma.

Tenino 13 10 11 21 – 55

Ocosta 51, North Beach 49 (OT)

Ocosta made the key plays late to beat North Beach 51-49 in overtime on Wednesday in Ocean Shores.

The Wildcats (6-13, 3-9 2B Pacific) and Hyaks (7-15, 5-9) were never separated by more than seven points in the 2B Pacific League play-in game to determine the league’s final playoff seed.

Down six late in regulation, Ocosta junior guard Kayden Turner hit a clutch pump-fake three followed by a 3-pointer from Wildcats freshman guard Michael Priest to tie the game at 42-all.

After both teams had a possession come up empty, Ocosta had a chance to play for the last shot. Wildcats junior guard Tarren Lewis missed a contested shot and teammate Luis Solis’ putback bounced off the rim as time expired, sending the game into overtime.

In the extra period, Ocosta junior guard Jesus Agramon stole the ball and scored on a breakaway layup to put the Wildcats up by two.

Later in overtime, North Beach’s Kobe Charley and Jade Charley each hit a 3-pointer in the game’s final minutes to get the Hyaks to within a bucket at 51-49.

But Ocosta was able to get a clean inbound with 0.7 left in the game, running out the clock to preserve the win.

“Overall, both teams gave literally everything they had and I can’t say enough about the job North Beach did tonight, as well as my own team,” Ocosta head coach Jason Quinby said. “It wasn’t always pretty basketball, but it was definitely entertaining.”

Agramon led Ocosta with 14 points while Lewis had eight points and a team-high 11 rebounds for the Wildcats.

North Beach was led by Tyrell Hovland and Jeremiah Eastman with 15 and 10 points, respectively.

With the win, Ocosta will enter the 2B District Tournament as the No. 5 seed while North Beach completed the regular season sixth in the 2B Pacific League.

Ocosta 7 14 8 13 9 – 51

North Beach 5 14 13 10 7 – 49

GIRLS PREP BASKETBALL

Aberdeen 47, Shelton 39

Aberdeen locked up a spot in the postseason with a 47-39 victory over Shelton on Wednesday at Shelton High School.

Despite not having its best offensive night, Aberdeen (13-6, 6-5 2B Pacific) won with a combination of poise and defense.

The Bobcats held Shelton (2-16, 1-10) to less than 10 points in three of four quarters, often using its press defense to create easy transition buckets.

Aberdeen’s composure was tested as Shelton had three technical fouls in the game and had a player ejected after throwing punches at Bobcats senior forward Jaylynn Phimmasone midway through the third quarter. Phimmasone converted 1-of-2 technical free throws then left the game to get evaluated before re-entering in the fourth quarter.

The Highclimbers cut Aberdeen’s lead to three in the final period, but Aberdeen hit 5-of-10 free throws in the frame to secure the win.

Senior twin sisters Annie and Zoe Troeh led Aberdeen. Zoe scored a game-high 15 points, grabbed nine rebounds and had seven steals while Annie (9 points, 10 rebounds, 10 steals) finished one point shy of a triple-double.

Phimmasone finished the game with 10 points for a Bobcats team that shot 16 of 67 from the field (24%) and hit 10-of-28 free throws (36%).

With the victory, the Bobcats have now won five straight games – eight of their last nine – and will enter the 2A District 4 Tournament as the 2A Evergreen Conference’s No. 4 seed.

“I’m very proud of these girls. … We’ve rattled off five games in a row and they’re playing with confidence,” Aberdeen head coach Curtis Eccles said. “We’re looking forward to getting better and going down south and competing against the Greater St. Helen’s (League) No. 5.”

Aberdeen will face the GSHL No. 5 seed in the district “pigtail” elimination game on Thursday, Feb. 7 (time, location to be determined).

Aberdeen 13 14 13 7 – 47

Shelton 8 16 7 8 – 39

Scoring: Aberdeen – Z. Troeh 15, Phimmasone 10, A. Troeh 9, Knutson 8, Brown 5. Shelton – Wylie 10.
