Tenino 60, Hoquiam 54
Hoquiam fell just short against Tenino in a 60-54 loss on Wednesday at Hoquiam High School.
The Grizzlies (7-9 overall, 2-5 1A Evergreen) got behind by eight points after the first quarter and played catch-up for much of the game.
Trailing 46-34 heading into the fourth quarter, Hoquiam rallied behind seniors Joey Bozich and Zander Jump, each of whom scored eight points in the frame.
But despite having its first 20-point quarter in the final period of the game, the Grizzlies couldn’t overcome the first-place Beavers (10-4, 5-1).
Hoquiam was led by freshman point guard Lincoln Niemi with 22 points.
Jump (10 points, 12 rebounds) finished with a double-double while Bozich (10 pts.) also scored in double digits for the Grizzlies.
According to Hoquiam head coach Jeff Niemi, the difference in the game was free-throw shooting. Hoquiam went 6 of 9 from the foul line while Tenino shot 25 free throws, converting 14 of them (56%).
“The effort was there. … We had a few too many turnovers down the stretch and we didn’t take care of the ball that great, but the story of the game was at the foul line,” he said. “Usually, if you make more free throws than your opponent shoots, you typically win, and that’s what we saw tonight.”
Both teams were an identical 21 of 59 from the field (35.5%) with Tenino outrebounding the Grizzlies 43-39.
With the loss, Hoquiam is 1.5 games behind Montesano for third place in the 1A Evergreen League.
The Grizzlies will honor their 2004 state-championship team when they host Aberdeen at 7 p.m. on Friday at Hoquiam Square Garden.
