Hoquiam lost a slugfest to Rochester 22-13 on Thursday at John Gable Park in Hoquiam.

In a stark contrast to their one-hit performance in Monday’s loss to the Warriors, the Grizzlies (0-6 overall, 0-3 1A Evergreen) hammered 13 hits – seven for extra bases – including two home runs off the bat of pitcher Hailee Burgess.

Hoquiam scored three runs in the first, all with two outs, capped by a Burgess two-run homer to center field.

Trailing 8-3 entering the bottom of the second, the Grizzlies offense added three more runs, highlighted by an RBI double by center fielder Mya Standstipher to score Avery Templer with Hoquiam’s sixth run of the game.

Burgess led off the bottom of the third with a home run to right, but the Grizzlies were playing catch-up the entire game. Burgess’ second round-tripper made it a 14-7 game after the Warriors scored six in the top half of the frame.

Hoquiam would add a run in the fourth on a Standstipher single to score Templer and scored five in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run triple from shortstop Lexi LaBounty, to trail 18-13.

But another four Rochester runs in the top of the sixth followed by the Grizzlies being held without a run in the bottom half – the first scoreless half-inning of the game – sealed Hoquiam’s 22-13 defeat.

“Girls played tough and battled every inning. We hit the ball well and made some great plays in the field,” Hoquiam head coach Brandon Templer said. “This young team keeps getting better every game.”

LaBounty added two triples while Mills smacked a pair of doubles in the loss.

Hoquiam will face Aberdeen in a Myrtle Street Rivalry contest at 4:30 p.m. on Friday at the Bishop Athletic Complex in Aberdeen.

Washougal 1, Elma 0

The lone run of the game came on the final play as Elma dropped a 1-0 pitcher’s dual to Washougal on Thursday at Camas High School.

The Eagles (1-2) and Panthers (3-1) were locked in a scoreless game through 8.5 innings until two-out single by Nash Nuemann on Cole Gustafson’s 1-2 pitch drove in Kadin Gibbons from third to end the game.

The loss spoiled a gem of a pitching performance from Elma left-handed starter Brody Palmer, who allowed just one hit with three walks and 11 strikeouts in five scoreless innings pitched.

Gustafson took the loss, allowing the one earned run on four hits and a pair of walks with a strikeout in 3 1-3 innings of solid relief work.

Elma managed just three hits in the game on two singles by Palmer and a double off the bat of shortstop Jack Alexander in the first.

Elma had two on and no outs to start the top of the second, but failed to score and had two on with one out in the fourth, but a popout and strikeout ended the potential rally.

The Eagles had at least one runner on base in seven of the game’s nine innings.

Elma faces Columbia-White Salmon in a doubleheader starting at noon on Friday at Columbia High School.
