GIRLS PREP BASKETBALL

Hoquiam 34, Willapa Valley 33

Hoquiam turned fortunes around after a lackluster loss in the season-opener to edge Willapa Valley 34-33 on Wednesday in Menlo.

After struggling to take care of the ball in a loss on Monday against Rochester, the Grizzlies (1-1 overall) slashed their turnover total in half, committing just 15 against the Vikings (0-1).

Nadine Stewart and Sydney Gordon led Hoquiam with seven points apiece.

Lexi LaBounty had six steals and Dylan Little had 10 rebounds for the Grizzlies.

Hoquiam hit 13-of-57 shots (22%) and had 32 rebounds in the game.

Willapa Valley was led by Hadlee Russell with 14 points and shot 14-of-44 from the field (32%) as a squad.

Willapa Valley takes on Oakville at 7 p.m. on Friday in Menlo.

Hoquiam faces Aberdeen in a Myrtle Street Rivalry game at 7 p.m. on Friday in Aberdeen.

Raymond-South Bend 52, Centralia 32

Raymond-South Bend found its game in the second half to beat Centralia 52-32 on Wednesday.

RSB (2-0) dominated several key stat categories in the first half, holding an advantage in offensive rebounds (9-2), turnovers (2-12) and fouls (3-10).

Despite all that, the Ravens held a slim 17-15 lead at halftime.

“Our nemeses was that we couldn’t finish lay-ins and our easy putbacks in the paint,” RSB head coach Jason Koski said.

That all changed in the second half as the Ravens made eight of its 10 made 3-point shots after halftime and had 11 assists on 14 field goals.

RSB was led by Kyndal and Kassie Koski with 14 and 13 points apiece, respectively, and had just 10 turnovers as a team in the game.

Sophomore post players Ava Baugher and Ava Pine led RSB with eight and seven rebounds, respectively.

“Super proud of our kids’ resiliency when they struggled to see the ball go through the hoop in the first half and to be able to keep grinding away and make plays when they had a chance,” Coach Koski said.

RSB is scheduled to face Napavine at 7 p.m. on Friday at Napavine High School.

Centralia 10 5 10 7 – 32

Raymond-South Bend 9 8 17 18 – 52

Neah Bay 64, Montesano 33

Montesano opened its season on the wrong end of a 64-33 loss to Neah Bay on Wednesday in Montesano.

The Bulldogs (0-1) – which return just one starter and has just one senior on the roster – struggled against a Red Devils team that returned the bulk of its team that won last season’s 1B State championship.

Monte managed just three points in the first quarter and saw the game get away from them after being outscored 25-11 in the third frame.

“They’re defending 1B state champs, they have four starters back and they looked it,” Monte head coach Mark Mansfield said. “We’re young and inexperienced. …. We did a lot of good things at times, but their quickness and our lack of experience was kind of the difference.”

Montesano was led by sophomore Lexi Stanfield with nine points as eight different Bulldogs scored in the game.

Monte has a quick turnaround as it will face La Center at 7 p.m. Thursday in Montesano.

Neah Bay 10 15 25 14 — 64

Montesano 3 9 11 10 – 33

Scoring: NB – Halttunen 14, R. Moss 14, C. Moss 13. Montesano – L. Stanfield 9, Dalan 6, Taylor 4, Blancas 4, Scharder 2, Jones 2, Wintrip 2, Parkin 2.

BOYS PREP SWIMMING

Aberdeen 94, Timberline 86

The Aberdeen (and Hoquiam) boys swimming teams started their seasons on Wednesday afternoon against Class 3A Timberline.

The Bobcats edged the Blazers, 94-86, at the YMCA of Grays Harbor pool in Hoquiam.

Junior Jacob Hallack and senior Tyler Bates each won two individual events and were part of two winning relays for Aberdeen. Hallack won the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard butterfly, while Bates claimed the 50 freestyle and the 100 backstroke.

Hallack, Bates, junior Denny Linker, and sophomore Zeke Olson won the 200 medley and the 200 freestyle relays. Olson won the 100 breaststroke and sophomore Tyson Powell won the 500 freestyle.

“It was a great start to the season for everyone,” AHS head coach Rob Burns said.

Powell, Olson and freshman Cooper Gill were cited for their performances.

On Tuesday, Aberdeen travels to Shelton to face the Highclimbers.
