Bellevue Christian 1, Montesano 0

A goal late in stoppage time turned out to be the difference in Montesano’s 1-0 loss to Bellevue Christian on Monday at Jack Rottle Field in Montesano.

The Bulldogs (2-2 overall) – which beat Bellevue Christian (2-0) on penalty kicks in the first round of last season’s state tournament – found itself locked in another tight, defensive matchup with the Vikings.

Both teams had flashes of offensive penetration into the opposing third in the first half, but both defenses kept any dangerous scoring chances from developing.

That changed somewhat in the second half, as the Vikings took command of the pitch, rarely allowing Montesano to break into the Bellevue Christian side of the pitch.

But though being pressured, Montesano’s defense held, keeping Vikings shots relegated to the perimeter to keep the game at a scoreless tie.

With time winding down and the game appearing to be headed toward a draw, the Vikings earned a free kick from the far side, just outside the Monte 18-yard box.

Bellevue Christian midfielder Lila Naeseth sent a low-arcing pass toward the front of the Bulldogs net, where junior midfielder Mckenna Hall got a knee on the ball to deflect it past goal keeper Izzie Taylor for a 1-0 lead.

After the reset, the referee’s whistle blew to end the match.

Taylor made 13 saves in the game – nine in the second half – to lead a Bulldogs defense that had plenty of positives to take away from the non-league loss.

Monte will be right back at it at 7 p.m. on Tuesday with a game at Centralia.

The Wildcats (3-0) scored three goals in the first half.

Ocosta senior midfielder Kylee Denny got the scoring started with a goal off a Bristol Towle assist in the 10th minute.

After the half, Towle scored four more times to lead Ocosta to the 7-0 win.

“The win was achieved by great effort and passing from the Lady Wildcats,” said Ocosta head coach Rissy Ness, who commended the play of Nelson, Rosander, Gabby Ness, Brizeyda Ayala-Rios and Wylee Keplinger for “their exceptional passing tonight.”

Ocosta keeper Amelia Saunders earned her third shutout in as many games this season.

Hoquiam goal keeper Emily Brodhead made 17 saves in the one-sided contest.

“This wasn’t our game. We stepped on the field and were not ready to play,” Hoquiam head coach Corri Schmid said. “I’m hoping we can hit the reset button for our game against Black Hills.”
