PREP BASEBALL

Black Hills 3, Aberdeen 1

Despite outhitting its opponent and getting a stellar pitching performance, Aberdeen ended up on the wrong end of a 3-1 loss to Black Hills on Wednesday in Tumwater.

The Bobcats (4-9 overall, 2-6 2A Evergreen) trailed 1-0 after starting pitcher Baylor Ainsworth allowed a run on a double and fielder’s choice ground out in the bottom of the first inning.

Aberdeen tied the game in the top of the fifth with three straight two-out singles. Senior Hunter Eisele drove in Ethan Larocque with a single to left field to make it a 1-1 game.

In the bottom of the frame, the Wolves (3-5, 2-5) took advantage of a leadoff walk and two straight Bobcats errors to take a 3-1 lead.

Aberdeen had the tying run on base in Bubba Jones with a one-out walk in the top of the seventh, but Wolves relief pitcher William Kytta got Sam Schreiber to ground into a game-ending 6-4-3 double play.

The loss spoiled a standout effort by Ainsworth on the bump for Aberdeen. The Bobcats senior allowed just one earned run on two hits and two walks with two strikeouts and threw 43 strikes out of 71 total pitches (60.5%).

After giving up a run in the first inning, Ainsworth retired 12 of 13 Wolves through the fourth inning.

Schreiber led Aberdeen at the dish, going 2-for-3 as the only player in the game with more than one base hit.

The Bobcats sit in sixth place in the 2A Evergreen Conference, a half game behind Black Hills in the loss column.
