Hoquiam lost to King’s Way Christian 203-241 on Thursday at Club Green Meadows in Vancouver.

The Grizzlies struggled on an unfamiliar course as not one Hoquiam golfer had played at the course before Thursday’s match.

“The track proved to be very challenging for all golfers as neither team saw much in the way of scoring on a beautiful afternoon,” Hoquiam head coach Terry Helland said. “(It is) a course that presented a lot of difficulty from 150 yards from start to finish.”

Riley Montoure led Hoquiam, scoring a 52 over nine holes of golf.

Hoquiam’s Montoure, Oliver Costales and Konnor Stigall will compete in the sub-district meet Monday and Tuesday at the Tumwater Valley Golf Course.

KWC (203) – Barrett Brahmer 50, Cooper Sprague 51, Jackson Lovata 51, Josiah Zimmer 51.

GIRLS PREP SOCCER

Aberdeen 3, Black Hills 0

Aberdeen bounced back from a tough league loss by blanking Black Hills 3-0 on Thursday in Tumwater.

The Bobcats (6-5 overall, 5-3 2A Evergreen) broke a scoreless tie when senior forward Annie Troeh took a pass from Arani Torres and sent a cross toward her twin sister, Zoe Troeh, who beat a defender and slotted in a shot for a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute.

Up 1-0 at halftime, Aberdeen used improved organization and aggression to pin the Wolves (2-9, 2-7) into their own defensive end for much of the second half.

The increased pressure paid off when Zoe Troeh netted a rebound off a long free kick from Bobcats senior defender Esmerelda Vega for a 2-0 lead in the 51st minute.

Aberdeen earned the all-important three-goal lead just eight minutes later when an Annie Troeh corner kick was knocked around in the box. Torres got to the loose ball and blasted it in from 10-yards out for the 3-0 lead.

“We played very well at times but need to be more consistent in our defensive positioning and decision making if we want to continue to win,” Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said.

The shots were even with both teams sending eight balls toward the net.

Cats goal keeper Jaylynn Phimmasone earned the clean sheet.

Fleming acknowledged the play of midfielder Scotlyn Lecomte for being “her typical self at defensive stopper” for the Bobcats.

With the win, Aberdeen remains in third place in the tightly-packed 2A Evergreen Conference. The Bobcats are a half-game behind second-place Centralia and sit a half-game ahead of W.F. West.

Aberdeen hosts Rochester at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Montesano 3, Tenino 0

Montesano scored three second-half goals to upend a defensive-minded Tenino Beavers team for a 3-0 league win on Thursday in Tenino.

Monte (8-2-2 overall, 5-0 1A Evergreen) held the large majority of possession throughout the first half but found itself in a scoreless tie at halftime as Tenino (7-6-1, 1-4) played with eight players back in a defensive shell, hoping to catch Monte off-guard with a potential counter-attack.

The Bulldogs were wise to the plan and remained patient, biding their time until a good scoring chance revealed itself.

Turned out that time would be in the 47th minute when Mayce Sanchez came off the bench to provide the Bulldogs a spark. The freshman midfielder scored on a shot to the upper corner to break the goose egg and give Monte the lead.

The dam broke for the Beavers after that as Monte would score less than 10 minutes later on a goal from junior forward Adda Potts followed by a Bethanie Henderson goal in the 71st minute to close things out.

“They were very defensive tonight,” Monte head coach Fidel Sanchez said of Tenino. “Mayce basically opened up the game for us. From there, we pretty much scored one after another.”

Coach Sanchez added that though his players showed dissatisfaction having dominated play in the first half without a goal to show for it, they remained focused to stay unbeaten in league play.

“It was a pretty boring game in the first half and that caused a little bit of frustration from us,” he said. “But nonetheless, the girls overcame their defensive plan and we were able to win.”

Montesano is scheduled to play East Jefferson at noon Saturday at Chimacum High School.
