Locals advance after first day of district championships

The Elma Eagles lead a contingent of local prep golfers after the first day of the 1A Evergreen District Championships on Monday at the Tumwater Valley Golf Course.

All six Elma golfers competing on Monday made the cut to advance to tomorrow’s final round.

Elma’s Grant Vessey sits in third place overall with a 76 over 18 holes of golf.

Qualifying with Vessey were teammates Robby Allen (83), Cason Seaberg (85), Kohan Morrison (87), Luke Schneider (92) and Brody Palmer (95).

Hoquiam’s Riley Montoure advanced to Day 2 with a 77 while Montesano’s Colton Grubb (82) and Ayhden Sauer (85) also made the cut.

Seton Catholic’s Jacob Parker leads with a 70, two strokes better than Tenino’s David Dallaire.

“What a wild weather day on the course. Rain, wind and very wet course conditions certainly made it difficult out there. But our boys showed up to play today and advancing all six to Day 2 is a huge accomplishment that I’m very proud of,” Elma head coach Collin McMaster said. “The overall scores are much improved from years past, even in tough conditions, so we will try to dry out overnight and get after again for Day 2.”

Twenty-one golfers are set to compete in Tuesday’s final round, which is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.

PREP GIRLS SOCCER

Toutle Lake 2, Ocosta 1

Ocosta lost to Toutle Lake for the first time in program history 2-1 on Monday at Toutle Lake High School.

The Wildcats (7-7, 3-2 2B Central-Pacific) allowed a goal in the 18th minute after the Ocosta defense failed to clear a corner kick.

Eighth-grade scoring phenom Bristol Towle knotted the game up five minutes later, taking a through pass from Kylee Denny then ripping a shot from 20-yards out for a goal.

The Ducks (4-8, 3-4) regained the lead on a penalty kick as Ocosta allowed a PK for the third straight game after not allowing one in its previous 11 games.

Ocosta had its chances with 14 shots, but were off-target most of the night with just three shots on goal.

“We need to generate more offense,” Ocosta head coach Mike King said. “We only have two goals in our last five games since Penny Park went out with an injury. We need more people to step up.”

Wildcats keeper Amelia Saunders made six saves in the game.

King commended the play of Scarlett Nelson and Denny at midfield, Towle up front and Joanah Rosander and Kennedy Reynolds on defense.

Ocosta hosts Toledo at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
