PREP SOFTBALL

Raymond-South Bend 25, Wahkiakum 5

Competent use of their bats and gloves were the keys to the Raymond-South Bend Ravens’ 25-5 victory over Wahkiakum on Monday at Wahkiakum High School.

The Ravens (2-0) wasted little time putting up runs as catcher Ava Pine rounded the bases for a two-run inside-the-park home run just three batters into the game.

An RBI double by second baseman Liz Lewis followed by three unearned runs on Mules errors put RSB up 7-0 after one half-inning.

The Ravens added four more in the second as speedy center fielder Emma Glazier drove a pitch to the left-center field gap and raced around the bases for a three-run inside-the-park home run followed by another Lewis RBI double.

RSB scored 14 runs in the third, highlighted by Glazier’s second inside-the-park home run of the game, to go up 25-5.

Ravens pitcher Maddy San worked around a one-out walk in the bottom of the third to close out the game and secure the mercy-rule victory.

“We hit the ball well and played great defense. I know I’ve said it before but we’re winning in so many ways,” RSB head coach Dakota Fluke said. “I’ve really been working with them on having confidence, working hard and doing the little things right and they’re definitely doing it.”

The Ravens offense had 10 hits, drew 10 walks and took advantage of Mules miscues, scoring nine unearned runs on six Wahkiakum errors.

Lewis went a perfect 3 for 3 while Glazier drove in six runs for the prolific Ravens offense.

The RSB defense was error free on Monday and had highlight-reel catches from Glazier deep in the right-field gap and shortstop Kassie Koski on a looping liner near the outfield grass.

“Our defense looks good, pitchers are working hard and the girls are having fun,” Fluke said. “That’s all you can ask for.”

Raymond-South Bend plays Toledo at 3 p.m. on Friday at Toledo High School, weather permitting.
