GIRLS PREP SOCCER

Klahowya 3, Montesano 0

Facing arguably the top program in the 1A class, Montesano dropped a non-league contest to Klahowya 3-0 on Thursday at Jack Rottle Field in Montesano.

The Bulldogs (3-3 overall) struggled to find much offense against an Eagles team that has won two state titles in the past three seasons and finished as state-runner up last year.

Klahowya (2-0-1) wasted little time scoring, driving deep into Montesano territory from the opening whistle and scoring a goal off the foot of junior Raven Stoner in the first minute of the match.

The Eagles nearly doubled the lead later in the first half when a shot headed toward the top half of the net clanged off the crossbar.

Facing pressure on its side of the pitch for the remainder of the half, Monte’s defense and goal keeper Izzie Taylor kept the score at 1-0 heading into the break.

But Klahowya put Monte’s hopes of an upset to rest with a goal just over a minute into the second half and a goal on a penalty kick a few minutes later to cap the score at 3-0.

Taylor made four saves in the game for the Bulldogs.

Monte opens league play with a game at 7 p.m. Thursday at Tenino High School.

Bear Creek 4, Elma 0

Elma is still searching for its first win after suffering a 4-0 loss to Bear Creek on Thursday in Redmond.

“The team was a little slow getting into the game,” Elma head coach Evan Valentine said. “I felt we were more than capable of competing with them it was just an off-day for us for some reason.”

No further information was available for this game.

Elma plays at Centralia at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Aberdeen defeated River Ridge 100-71 on Thursday at River Ridge High School.

The Bobcats won seven of the meet’s 12 events.

Mija Hood won the 200-yard individual medley (2:30.06) and the 100 butterfly (1:07.54) with her Bobcat teammates Arianna Alavez (50 freestyle, 29.66), Gabby Orona (100 free, 1:08.58); Zahrya Graham (1-meter dive, 121.25) and Emma Mullins (100 backstroke, 1:17.33) also winning races.

Eisele cited the three 500-yard freestylers – Isabella Melville, Asha Martin and Zander Jaquez –each of whom improved their respective times, as well as Brinnley Colburn, Molly Gundersen and Natalie Mareth.

Aberdeen knocks off Tumwater, Black Hills

Aberdeen defeated Tumwater 119-48 and Black Hills 125-49 at a tri-meet on Tuesday at the Evergreen State College Athletic Complex in Olympia.

The Bobcats won eight of the 12 events overall in their dual meet, including all three relays – 200 medley (Mija Hood, Wendy Neil, Ava Benn, Emma Mullins), 200 freestyle (Gracie Qualey, Arianna Alvarez, Benn, Mullins) and 400 freestyle (Gabby Orona, Isabella Melville, Asha Martin, Hood).

Other event winners were Hood (50 free, 100 back), Willow Valentine (200 free), Mullins (100 free) and Zahrya Graham (diving).

“This was a great opportunity to swim against some very fast competition at the same time,” Eisele said. “The girls benefited from the competition and there were a lot of time improvements. This meet also showed they can compete against bigger Class 3A and 4A schools.”

Eisele cited Kristi Adams, Rylei Buchanan, Mary Hiar and Vida Powell for their improvements.

On Tuesday, Aberdeen hits the road again to take on Shelton.
