Prep Roundup: Ocosta softball’s Erika Snider tosses no-hitter against South Bend

Wildcats hurler strikes out eight in 11-0 victory

WESTPORT — Ocosta High School softball pitcher Erika Snider tossed a no-hitter to lead the Wildcats to an 11-0 Pacific 2B League victory over the South Bend Indians in the first game of a doubleheader on Tuesday.

Snider completed the six-inning no-hitter throwing 80 pitches — 52 for strikes — while tallying eight strikeouts to just two walks. Snider had at least one strikeout against seven of nine South Bend batters.

The Wildcats gave their ace plenty of run support, scoring five runs over the first three innings and sealing the win with a six-spot in the bottom of the sixth for a walk-off, mercy-rule victory.

Snider herself was a big part of the offensive explosion, going 1-for-3 with a double and a team-high four RBI.

Sisters Kaylee and Lillyan Barnum each collected two hits and two RBI for the Wildcats.

Chloe Sawyer took the loss for the Indians, allowing 11 runs on eight hits while striking out nine.

The Ocosta offense carried the momentum over to the second game, as the Wildcats scored 10 in the first and a combined 13 runs in the second and third innings to earn a 23-0 win.

Kaylee Barnum had a whale of a game at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two home runs, two triples and eight RBI in the 2-1/2 inning game.

Ocosta (12-3 overall, 8-0 Pacific 2B) hosts Chief Leschi in a doubleheader at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

South Bend (8-2, 4-2) plays at Raymond in a twin bill at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

Montesano blitzes Hoquiam, 14-3

MONTESANO — The Bulldogs offense scored 14 runs over the first three innings en route to a 14-3 five-inning win over the Grizzlies on Tuesday at Montesano High School.

Samantha Stanfield went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs to pace Monte. Younger sister Jessica belted a home run and Emma Jensen added two runs, two hits and two RBI for Monte (10-1, 5-0 Evergreen 1A).

ReyLynn Dunn smacked a home run for the Grizzlies softball team.

Hoquiam falls to 7-4 overall, 3-3 in league with the loss.

Aberdeen edges Centralia, 4-3

CENTRALIA — Reagan Glanz’s RBI double in the top of the seventh broke a 3-3 tie and propelled the Bobcats to a 4-3 victory over Centralia on Tuesday.

After Glanz’s run-scoring knock gave Aberdeen the lead, Bobcats pitcher Jalyn McDaniel shut down the Tigers in the bottom half of the frame. With the tying run on second base and the winning run at the plate in the form of Tigers senior Courtney Carlson. McDaniel got Carlson on a flyout to end the threat and the game.

“It was a good, hard-fought win,” Aberdeen head coach Scott Wilson said. “I’m proud of our girls. They never gave up.”

Aberdeen (7-8 overall, 5-6 Evergreen 2A) hosts Rochester at 4:30 p.m. today.

Elma swepps Tenino in doubleheader

ELMA — The Eagles handeled business against the Beavers by sweeping a doubleheader and swept the doubleheader 15-0 and 16-1 on Tuesday in Elma.

On a day of strong pitching performances and good hitting, Eagles head coach Roger Elliot said it was good to see his pitchers find the strike zone.

“I was just happy to see the girls throw strikes. We wanted to be come right at them and be aggressive,” he said.

Hatton’s arm leads Ocosta sweep

SOUTH BEND — Ocosta pitcher Cole Hatton made the most of his maximum 105 pitches on Tuesday, starting both games in a dominant pitching performance to lead the Wildcats to a doubleheader sweep over South Bend, 10-0 and 13-0.

Hatton allowed just one hit while striking out eight in four innings pitched in game one and toed the rubber for the Wildcats in game two, striking out 10 with just one hit allowed over 4-1/3 innings.

Hatton also went a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI in the first game.

“I was very happy with Cole. He was in complete control both on the mound and at the plate,” Ocosta head coach Mike Alton said.

Ocosta is now 13-1 overall and leads the Pacific 2B League with a 12-1 record.

South Bend drops to 6-5 overall and 4-4 in league play.

North Beach sweeps Chief Leschi

North beach had no problem getting the bats going as they scored early in often in their doubleheader sweep of Chief Leschi on Tuesday.

North beach won the first game of the day 26-5 with the help of 15 runs in the seventh inning and won the night cap 9-4 in a game that was called after four innings due to darkness.

The Hyaks had a pretty healthy lead going into the seventh inning of the first game but North Beach head coach Dave Hinchen said he enjoyed watching his team get on a roll.

“The team turned it on. We just hit the ball really well in that last inning. Hitting is contagious and it was kind of fun to watch,” he said.

North Beach got off to a slower start in the second game but started seeing the ball better the second time through the lineup and began to build a lead in the second and third innings.

The Hyaks were seeing the ball well but dwindling sunlight made visibility an issue causing the game to be called in the middle of the fourth.

North Beach (3-5, 5-6) will take on Raymond at home in a doubleheader on Friday.

Hoquiam doubles up on Tenino, 8-4

Hoquiam baseball strung some hist together in the late innings to beat Tenino 8-4 on the road on Tuesday.

Hoquiam (6-1, 8-2) got home runs off the bat of Liam Odel and Payton Quintanilla helped give the Grizzlies some breathing room against one of the better teams in the league.

Hoquiam head coach Steve Jump said he liked the way his team battled.

“It was a team win. Any time you can beat a Tenino team that’s always tough, it’s a good day,” he said.

Hoquiam will next play a non-league road game against Eatonville on Friday.

Montesano blanks Elma, 13-0

ELMA — Monte baseball got solid performance on the mound and plenty of hits in its 13-0 win over the Eagles in Elma on Tuesday.

Montesano (11-1, 7-0) scored in every inning except one but really blew the game open in the third and fourth innings with a pair of five-run rallies.

Nate Kloempken cruised in his four innings work and struck out seven batters while allowing only two base runners.

Mote coach Mike Osgood said

“He pitched really well, we got the bats going and played good defense behind Nate. It was a good team win,” he said.

Montesano will be back in action against Elma (4-8, 1-5) for a rematch in Montesano on Wednesday.

Raymond takes two from NW Christian

LACEY — Seagulls pitchers allowed a total of five hits as Raymond swept a doubleheader against the Navigators, 18-1 and 9-2, in Lacey on Tuesday.

Hayden Stephens went 3-for-4 and Cole Enslow added a triple and a double for Raymond in game one. Enslow also threw a one-hitter to earn the win on the mound.

“Overall, I thought we played very well. We hit the ball around and Cole pitched one heck of a game,” Seagulls head coach Luke Abbott said. “(I’m) Very proud of how they handled themselves.”

In their 9-2 victory in the nightcap, Christian Anderson went 3-for-4 with a double for the Seagulls.

Elma holds off Monte, 3-2

ELMA — The Eagles stormed out to a 3-0 lead at the half thanks to a pair of goals from Carlos Bautista and had to hold off a second-half charge by the Bulldogs to earn a 3-2 victory on Tuesday in Elma.

Elma’s Martin Baltazar broke a scoreless tie in the 16th minute after cutting in from the right wing and placing a shot inside the near post.

Bautista scored the first of his two goals on a crosss from Baltazar in the 25th minute followed by a hard, bending shot from 25-yards out five minutes later.

Monte scored on a penalty kick in the 64th minute and off a loose ball in front of Elma goalkeeper AJ Hernandez in the 70th minute. But the Eagles’ defense held over the final ten minutes to preserve the win.

Elma (5-8, 2-3 Evergreen 1A) plays at Hoquiam on Tuesday.

Montesano (0-9-2, 0-4) faces the Grizzlies on Thurday in Hoquiam.

Aberdeen loses to Black Hills, 2-1

TUMWATER— The Bobcats rallied from a goal down in the second half to tie the game, but ultimately fell to the Black Hills Wolves 2-1 on Tuesday.

Down 1-0, Bobcats midfielder Tony Oropeza beat the Wolves defense a buried a shot into the back of the net from 16-yards out to tie the game at 1-1 in the second half.

But approximately five minutes later, the Wolves scored to take a 2-1 advantage they would hold onto despite a flurry of Bobcats shots on goal in the final half.

“We had trouble with our ball control and have to tighten up on the defensive end marking up,” Aberdeen head coach Larry Flemming said. “But we hustled and worked hard and almost came back to tie it at the end.”

The Bobcats (9-4, 5-3 Evergreen 2A) host Centralia at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

GIRLS TENNIS

Pratt wins big singles match, but Aberdeen falls to WF West

CHEHALIS — Aberdeen’s top singles player Aleeta Pratt’s big matchup against the player believed to be her toughest competition for a league title was cut short on Tuesday as WF West’s Sydney Cameron had to bow out of the match early due to medical reasons, giving Pratt a 3-2 win. It was Aberdeen’s only match win of the day, as the Bobcats fell to the Bearcats 5-1.

But while the feature match lasted, it was one to watch according to Aberdeen head coach Ashley Kohlmeier.

“There was great rallies and winning points. It was a super high-quality match,” Kohlmeier said. “Both were playing excellent tennis.”

The two will likely meet up again when the teams meet at 3:30 p.m. on Monday in Chehalis.

TRACK AND FIELD

North Beach Track

North Beach High School’s track and field team came away victorious in four events and had a few athletes reach new personal bests at the Adana Crossover meet in Chehalis on Tuesday.

Lorin Cox set season-best times in both the 100- and 200-meter races, winning both events with times of 13.09 and 27.53, respectively.

Reagan Harnagy recorded a personal-best height of five fee, eight inches in the high jump, six inches higher than her previous best mark.

North Beach track coach Peter Fry said his athletes benefited from good weather.

“We had a really nice warm day in Chehalis and our jumpers and runners really enjoyed that,” he said.
