Black Hills 14, Hoquiam 2

Hoquiam fell behind early and never caught up in a 14-2 mercy-rule loss to Black Hills on Wednesday at Black Hills High School.

The Grizzlies (0-2) trailed 5-0 after the Wolves scored five runs in the bottom of the first on four singles, two walks and a double.

Hoquiam trailed 6-0 when pitcher Hallie Burgess singled to drive in Mya Standstipher in the top of the third inning for the Grizzlies’ first run of the game.

Trailing 11-1 in the fifth inning, third baseman Aaliyah Kennedy singled to drive in Burgess for Hoquiam’s second and final run.

The Grizzlies had 10 hits in the game, with left fielder Avery Broadhead, shortstop Lexi LaBounty, Burgess and Kennedy recording multi-hit games, but consistency was an issue, according to Hoquiam head coach Brandon Templer.

“The girls made some great plays again but we need to start being more consistent at the plate as a whole team,” he said. “Slow start but we have a good mentality and a growth mind set with positive attitudes.”

Burgess and LaBounty combined to allow 14 runs – 13 earned – on 18 hits with one strikeouts and 10 walks in the loss.

Hoquiam hosts Elma in a league game set for 6 p.m. on Monday.
