Aberdeen 1, Shelton 0
Aberdeen picked up another key league victory with a 1-0 win over Shelton on Thursday at Stewart Field in Aberdeen.
The Bobcats (8-2, 6-1 2A Evergreen) played even with the Hiclimbers through a scoreless first half, with Aberdeen narrowly missing a few header chances at the far post and Shelton nearly scoring on a header at the far post if not for Bobcats goalkeeper Mauricio Avila laying out to make the save.
Aberdeen nearly took a first-half lead when a Ricky Granados free kick from 20 yards out clanged off the crossbar at the end of the first half.
Nearing the halfway point of the second half, Aberdeen’s Josh Alcala played a ball forward to senior forward Marc Avila, who was taken down inside the penalty area after an adept hesitation dribble caused a Shelton foul.
Aberdeen’s Edgar Ceja converted the subsequent penalty kick for a 1-0 lead in the 60th minute.
The Bobcats missed a handful of chances to double the lead down the stretch, with four quality attempts going wide of net.
But the Aberdeen defense continued its fine play this season with a shutdown effort in the second half to preserve the victory.
“Although I feel like our first touch is not where it should be at this point in the season, we had moments of brilliance in the build-up, but just couldn’t convert enough times on those chances,” said Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming, who credited the play of defenders Angel Espinoza, Cris Lopez, Ryker Scott and Ceja. “Our defense was once again excellent and kept Shelton out of our defensive third for the most part.”
Cats keeper Mauricio Avila and Grady Osina combined to record the shutout.
The Aberdeen JV team tied 1-1 on Thursday, with Evan Sanchez scoring the goal for the Bobcats.
Aberdeen is tied for first place with Tumwater with 16 points in the 2A Evergreen Conference standings. The Bobcats currently hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Thunderbirds after a 3-2 penalty-kick shootout win on April 15.
The Bobcats face fourth-place Black Hills at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in Aberdeen.

Aberdeen 0 1 – 1

Adna 10, Pe Ell-Willapa Valley 7
Pe Ell-Willapa Valley’s comeback attempt fell short in a 10-7 loss to Adna on Thursday in Pe Ell.
The Titans (7-5) trailed 7-0 after two innings of play and were down 10-2 heading to the bottom of the sixth inning.
That’s when the Titans offense made its move, scoring five runs – highlighted by RBI singles from Blane King, Brayden Ruddell and Lucas Lusk to pull to within striking distance at 10-7.
But that was as close as PWV would get a Mauricio Morales grounded into a double play in the seventh to end the game.
Eddie Clements took the loss for the Titans, allowing four earned runs on six hits and six walks in three innings pitched.
Morales allowed three runs – two earned – on eight hits and a walk and a strikeout in four innings of relief.
Lucas Lusk had two hits to lead PWV while third baseman Liam Smaciarz hit a solo home run to get the Titans on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth.

Ocosta would tie the game when designated hitter Rustyn Quinby drove in Dominick Hanson-Miranda with a sacrifice fly in the fifth and took the lead when Logan White scored on a Kevin Lopez single in the sixth.
The Wildcats added an insurance run in the sixth inning when Lopez scored on a Ravens error, one of five RSB had in the game.
